Thakur Rakesh Singh, Sunil Dutt, an affluent descendant of royalty, is a lawyer and happily married to Geeta Sadhana Shivdasani for three years. He travels to London for higher studies, and after a year receives news that Geeta is ill. He returns at once, only to witness Geeta’s death in his arms. He builds a small memorial in his mansion to honor her memory and spends long hours there, listening to recordings of Geeta’s songs.

One day, Inspector Daljit Anwar Hussain arrives and explains that a bandit named Raina claims to be Rakesh’s wife. Rakesh meets her and is shocked to see a woman who looks exactly like Geeta. She insists that she is indeed Geeta and recounts intimate moments they shared, while he remains skeptical, wondering how such a tragedy could be a mistake.

The case goes to court. During the cross-examination, the woman answers every question correctly and explains that she was kidnapped by someone a few days before her arrest. When asked why she has no mangala sutra on her, she says she removed it that day. He also asks about Geeta’s diary, which she supposedly kept near her, but she cannot provide it. Convinced she is an impostor, he asks the court to convict her, and she becomes emotionally unstable, ending up in a mental institution.

Geeta, however, had a twin sister named Nisha, a bandit just like their mother. Geeta had kept this criminal lineage a secret, and as the truth begins to surface, she tries to protect her marriage by hiding the past. One night, Nisha arrives at Geeta’s home in need of shelter; Geeta helps her by clothing her and even lending her mangalsutra to wear.

But when Geeta returns outside, Ranjit Singh Prem Chopra, Nisha’s husband, mistakes Geeta for Nisha and takes her away. She tries to explain the confusion to Rakesh, and as this unfolds, Ranjit Singh arrives and confirms Geeta’s story. The police intervene, shooting him, and he dies at Nisha’s memorial. With the truth laid bare, Rakesh and Geeta reconcile and begin their ordinary life together once more.
