F1: The Movie

The climax takes place on the streets of Abu Dhabi, where the struggling APX team finally has a working car for the last race of the season. Both drivers – the grizzled veteran Sonny Hayes and his talented rookie teammate Joshua Pearce – have healed from earlier crashes and have learned to trust each other’s instincts. As the laps wind down, the two APX cars find themselves battling side‑by‑side with a host of real‑world F1 stars, most notably Lewis Hamilton, who is leading the pack.

With only three laps left the race becomes a three‑way sprint. Sonny, still carrying the physical toll of his past accident, deliberately eases off to give Joshua a chance to take the win. In a split‑second of contact, however, Joshua and Hamilton both spin out, leaving the track open for Sonny. He surges forward, feeling the pure rush that drove him back to the sport decades earlier, and crosses the line first, delivering APX an improbable, historic victory.

Even as the team celebrates, Sonny’s joy is tempered by his long‑standing philosophy: he races for the love of the sport, not for fame or wealth. He tells his teammate Kate that the peace he finds behind the wheel is what matters, and after the win he quietly packs his battered van and drives away, heading toward a new, unscripted racing life far from the Formula 1 circuit. The film ends on the note that, having reclaimed his passion and proved his worth, Sonny is ready to chase the next thrill wherever it may be.
