What Happens in My Wife’s Murder: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of My Wife’s Murder (2005) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Ravi Patwardhan [Anil Kapoor] finds his life upended when a dead woman is recovered from a small pond, drawing him into a case that may connect to a missing-person report he filed along with his father-in-law. The dead woman is identified as Sheela R. Patwardhan [Suchitra Krishnamoorthi], Ravi's wife. According to Ravi, Sheela had left their home to visit Shirdi with her parents. When Ravi's father-in-law reports she hasn't arrived even after 24 hours, they go to the nearest police station and file the missing-person report.

Ins. Tejpal Randhawa [Boman Irani] concludes that Sheela was waylaid on her way to her parents' house by person(s) unknown, beaten, and her body left in the pond. But this case puzzles him, as there is no apparent motive for unknown person(s) to waylay her, as no money was taken and her body did not show any sign of sexual molestation. Taking these facts into consideration, Insp. Tejpal starts to disbelieve and suspect Ravi. Ravi's assistant Reena [Nandana Sen] tries to help Ravi. However, her involvement makes the matter worse for her and her boyfriend Raj [Rajesh Tandon], who suspects her to have a relationship with Ravi. The movie then takes the audience through a thrilling tale of how Tejpal chases down the fleeing Ravi and ultimately ascertains the truth behind Sheela's murder, all while Ravi's young son [Master Zain Ansari] watches the events unfold.

My Wife’s Murder Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about My Wife’s Murder (2005): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Inspector Tejpal suspect Ravi of killing his wife?

Insp. Tejpal suspected Ravi primarily because the murder lacked any clear external motive. Sheela was not robbed and showed no signs of sexual assault, which suggested the killer likely had a personal connection to the victim. Since Ravi was her husband and the one who filed the missing person report, his account of events became increasingly questionable to the detective as the investigation progressed.

Why was there no robbery or sexual assault evidence in Sheela's murder?

The absence of robbery and sexual assault clues was precisely what puzzled Insp. Tejpal and pointed toward a personal dispute rather than a random crime. The killer had no apparent financial motive and the attack was not sexually motivated, which led investigators to consider that someone close to Sheela might be responsible for her death.
