On a normal day, Rani Kashyap Saxena, a housewife, steps outside to feed stray dogs when a sudden explosion rips through her home. The body is charred beyond recognition, with a severed hand that she identifies as her husband, Rishabh “Rishu” Saxena. The film cuts between the shocking present and a careful police investigation, weaving a tense narrative where what happened on that day remains intertwined with the search for motive.

A flashback reveals their arranged marriage: Rishu is smitten from the start, while Rani marries him after her previous fiancé leaves her. The household carries quiet tensions, and an early lack of consummation leaves Rishu hurt and distant. The situation worsens when his cousin Neel Tripathi arrives, a charming presence who awakens Rani’s attraction. The affair that follows is intense and transformative; Rani even learns to cook mutton, despite being a vegetarian, as she explores a life with Neel. She confesses that she wants to marry him, but Neel, afraid of commitment, flees. After Rani reveals the truth to Rishu, his demeanor darkens, yet he still protects her from others who chastise her.

In the present, the police—aware of the history between Rani and Rishu—suspect that she and Neel orchestrated the crime. They employ polygraphs, scrutinize footage, and piece together Neel’s movements around the house in the moments before the explosion. A troubling moment appears when Rani’s polygraph test suggests deception, as her blood pressure is manipulated during testing.

The past timeline shows a turning point: after Rani’s revelation, Rishu transforms into a controlling, sadistic figure, inflicting harm on Rani and even pursuing Neel. Neel fights back, knocking Rishu unconscious when the violence escalates. Despite the abuse, Rani endures it out of love, and over time the couple manages to reconcile and become intimate again.

Narration of the explosion-day events reveals that Neel came over, an argument ensued, and Rishu urged Rani to wait outside as the situation escalated. The police, though aware of their complicated history, struggle to prove wrongdoing, and Rani exits the station with a smirk as she is acquitted.

The truth behind the crime emerges in a dramatic confession: Neel had attempted to blackmail them with sex tapes, angering Rishu who attacked Neel. A brutal fight ensues; Neel overpowers Rishu, and in a bid to avoid jail, they stage the crime scene. Rishu cuts off his own hand and places the severed limb beside Neel’s body, while they rig a gas stove to blow, escaping through the back door with Rishu disguising himself as Neel. Rani disposes of the crucial evidence by feeding the mutton leg to the dogs, and the explosion serves to erase their traces.

Five years later, the town’s inspector, about to leave, buys a copy of a murder-thriller that Rani had discussed, and reading it makes him see the real sequence of events. Yet with the case closed and time passed, he can do nothing to alter the outcome. The ending follows the couple’s reunion, with Rishu living on but missing his left hand, a stark reminder of the carefully constructed crime.
