Shekhar Gupta, played by Rishi Kapoor, is the elder son of a wealthy industrialist named Kedarnath Gupta. From the moment he sees Damini, portrayed by Meenakshi Seshadri, performing a dance at a charity event, he is immediately captivated by her beauty and spirit. Damini comes from a modest background, yet she is known for her strong voice against social injustices and her desire to stand up for the truth. Her life takes a significant turn when her sister elopes with Birju Moghe, an alcoholic mimicry artist, in an attempt to escape the burden of dowry and social constraints, thus demonstrating her family’s struggles and her willingness to challenge societal norms.
Shekhar and Damini fall in love and decide to marry, which leads her to move into Shekhar’s opulent bungalow, a symbol of their union and his family’s wealth. However, her arrival introduces tension, especially with Tolu Bajaj, the Guptas’ business partner, who had plans to marry his daughter to Shekhar. Feeling slighted, Bajaj severs his business ties with the family and begins to harbor resentment, plotting against the Guptas.
Damini’s bond with Urmi, a young maid-servant raised in the Gupta household, becomes an essential part of the story. During the Hindu festival of Holi, an alarming incident occurs: Shekhar’s younger brother, Rakesh, and his friends brutally gang-rape Urmi. Damini witnesses this horrific event, desperately trying to intervene before it’s too late, but tragically, the assault has already taken place, and Urmi is later discarded by the roadside by Rakesh and his accomplices. This crime exposes the dark underbelly of their privileged world, yet the Gupta family initially attempts to conceal the embarrassing incident to protect their reputation.
Refusing to remain silent, Damini chooses to bring the matter to the police, despite Shekhar’s pleas for her to stay quiet. When police arrive at her home, she denies any knowledge of the assault, but it is soon revealed that Tolu Bajaj has bribed law enforcement officials to amplify the scandal and tarnish the family’s reputation. The court case that follows becomes a battleground of justice versus corruption. The family hires the notorious lawyer Indrajit Chaddha to defend them. During the first hearing, Chaddha portrays Damini as mentally unstable, resulting in her being confined in a mental institution for two weeks. This turn of events deeply upsets Shekhar, as it appears the family’s efforts to hide their shame are gaining ground, while Bajaj and the Guptas secretly rejoin forces.
At the mental hospital, Damini overhears a sinister conversation between Rakesh and the doctor, revealing that they are plotting to make her mentally ill or even eliminate her, framing it as a suicide. Determined to reveal the truth, Damini escapes and is saved by Govind, played by Sunny Deol, an unemployed lawyer with a troubled past. Inspired by her courage, Govind agrees to help her reopen the case, knowing that justice needs a voice this time.
Their efforts soon uncover disturbing evidence: the Gupta family’s lawyer and others attempt to cover their tracks by orchestrating the murder of Urmi, claiming it was a suicide, and tampering with evidence like the fake suicide note. As the case progresses, Govind cross-examines key witnesses, including the driver of the Guptas, proving that everyone knew about the crime—the driver included—and establishing that the supposed suicide was fabricated.
The Gupta family’s desperation increases, and in a dramatic act, Indrajit Chaddha feigns chest pain to delay proceedings, suggesting a possible move to settle out of court. However, Govind challenges him publicly, daring to face him in the courtroom. This bold move prompts the Guptas to send hired goons to eliminate Govind, but he bravely fights off their attack. Meanwhile, Damini begins to reveal her strength in public, gaining widespread support from people who are outraged by the injustice.
As tensions escalate to a breaking point, the Guptas and Bajaj plan a final attempt to kill Damini. She, with Shekhar’s support, learns of their conspiracy. Shekhar, played by Aamir Khan, is kidnapped by goons seeking to silence him, but Mamaji arrives in time to rescue him. The conspirators, including Bajaj, try to assassinate Damini directly outside the court, but they are thwarted when the local community intervenes, challenging their authority.
Both Damini and Shekhar testify in court, formally delivering their witness accounts. Their bravery helps secure convictions against Rakesh and his friends, who are found guilty of the heinous assault. The Gupta family’s attempt to cover up the crime also fails as Bajaj, Chaddha, and other conspirators are sentenced for their role. Justice is finally served, and Shekhar is spared punishment for his involvement due to his pivotal role in fighting for truth. The court explicitly recognizes Damini’s resilience and unwavering resolve, honoring her as an example of moral courage and integrity. Her actions not only seek justice for Urmi but also set a historic precedent in the fight against social injustices, highlighting that even in the face of powerful opposition, one person’s stand for truth can make a lasting difference.
