Girl You Know It's True

Robert 'Rob' Pilatus is adopted by a German couple in Munich. Growing up in an all-white neighborhood, he often feels out of place and finds comfort in music, particularly that of the pop group Boney M.

After a heated argument with his adoptive father who disapproves of his desire to pursue an entertainment career, Rob decides to leave home. This pivotal moment sets him on a path toward his future in music.

On his journey, Rob meets Fabrice 'Fab' Morvan, an aspiring choreographer from France. The two bond over their shared passion for performance and begin to work together.

Rob and Fab perform as podium dancers at a nightclub, where they catch the attention of music journalist Ingrid 'Milli' Segeith. She introduces them to producer Frank Farian, who offers them a unique opportunity in the music industry.

Rob and Fab reluctantly agree to lip-sync to the already recorded hit 'Girl You Know It's True.' They are informed by Frank and Milli that this practice is common, leading them to embrace their new identity as Milli Vanilli.

Milli Vanilli is signed by Arista Records in America, where they are received with enthusiasm. As they relocate, they quickly gain a massive fan base, but their newfound fame comes with challenges, including a dialect coach to refine their accents.

While enjoying their success, Rob and Fab indulge in a lavish lifestyle that includes drug use and reckless behavior. This choice begins to tarnish their image as the original singers of 'Girl You Know It's True' express outrage over the unauthorized use of their song.

Despite the controversies, Milli Vanilli wins a Grammy for Best New Artist. The original session singers, however, are dismayed to see the duo receiving the recognition for their work, which stirs tension in the music industry.

As pressure mounts, Frank Farian holds a press conference in New York where he publicly reveals that Milli Vanilli did not sing their own album. This shocking confession leads to a massive scandal that shakes the music industry.

After the scandal breaks, Milli Vanilli loses their Grammy award and Arista Records deletes their music catalog. Fans turn against them, and Rob falls into a downward spiral fueled by addiction, while Fab struggles with the aftermath.

Rob hits rock bottom, even spending time in jail for theft. After his release, he returns to Germany but tragically dies from a drug overdose, leaving a void in Fab's life.

At Rob's funeral, his sister Carmen confronts the presence of Frank, accusing him of betrayal. Meanwhile, Fab is missing, reflecting on his complicated feelings after abandoning Rob during his struggles.

In a voice-over, Fab expresses his regret to Rob for leaving him during his darkest days, believing he needed to prioritize his own well-being. Rob reassures him from beyond that it was not his fault, highlighting their enduring friendship.
