Karlin Pickett [Eric Roberts] is a charismatic, boundary-pushing disc jockey at KPHX, whose fearless flirting and blunt on-air chatter attract a large and loyal audience. After a heated fight with his latest date, Vivian Porter [Lisa Thornhill], she dies, and the tragedy forces him to relocate to Los Angeles. There he takes a job at KOZY, owned by Rick Harris [Stephen Tobolowsky], where he meets Jon Price [Jason Gedrick], an aspiring DJ who is dating Sharon Penn [Jennie Garth], a young lawyer trying to work her way up in a competitive field.
Karlin’s on-air persona grows bolder, and he begins to shock listeners with sexually charged conversations, a tactic that still yields skyrocketing ratings. He befriends Jon and offers him a slot as co-host, steering him toward the glamorous yet grueling world of late-night radio. As the show climbs in popularity, they devise a risky gimmick: push the envelope by having listeners confess to real crimes, in hopes of generating even more calls and engagement. The scheme becomes central to their success, but it also sows tension and moral doubt.
Jon soon discovers that Karlin is orchestrating calls from his own circle—confessions that were never real—putting Jon in the uncomfortable position of betraying their audience. Their partnership strains under the weight of deception, and Karlin pressures Jon to keep quiet by dangling the prospect of his own show. Meanwhile, Sharon’s patience wears thin as Jon’s growing materialism clashes with their relationship, especially when she learns he’s involved with a woman named Cynthia Berkley [Leonora Scelfo].
As the truth begins to surface, Jon realizes that the murder Karlin’s friend spoke of was not a fabrication. When he confronts Karlin, the latter threatens to expose Jon’s role in the scheme if he talks. Not long after, Karlin poisons his next target, Cynthia Berkley, using drugs and a narcotic ploy to cover his crime. It becomes clear that the calls to the radio station were recorded with a different voice, and Karlin’s murderous plans are more real than anyone suspected.
Jon refuses to stay silent and chooses to confront Karlin directly, unaware that Karlin has already spun a web to frame him for murder. In a tense confrontation, Karlin tries to force Jon into silence, while Jon reveals that he had secretly placed a microphone on his own body, and that listeners have already heard Karlin’s confession broadcast to the world. A gunfight erupts in the ensuing chaos, and Karlin is eventually shot and killed by the police.
In the aftermath, Jon resigns from KOZY and resolves to start anew, seeking to repair his relationship with Sharon and leave the destructive cycle behind. The story tracks how ambition, sensationalism, and personal loyalties collide in a world where ratings can ruin lives and truth can be the hardest confession of all.
