Robert “Rob” Pilatus, a mixed-race child adopted by a German family in a predominantly white neighborhood in Munich, finds comfort in the sounds of Boney M, a popular pop group produced by the established music impresario Frank Farian. As he grows older, a disagreement with his adoptive father, who disapproves of his aspirations in entertainment, prompts Rob to leave home. During this journey, he crosses paths with Fabrice “Fab” Morvan, an aspiring choreographer from France, and together they begin to forge their path in the entertainment world.
Their hard work leads them to become podium dancers at a nightclub, where they catch the eye of music journalist Ingrid “Milli” Segeith who introduces them to Frank. He reveals he has already recorded a song called “Girl You Know It’s True,” and all they need to do is mime the performance—a request they reluctantly accept. As they step into the spotlight, Rob and Fab discover that their success relies on a cover version, but reassured by Frank and Milli that this practice is standard in the industry, they press on. The song surges to the top of the charts in Europe, catapulting them into fame as Milli Vanilli.
Once they secure a record deal with Arista Records in the United States, they are met with warm reception, yet behind the scenes, their lives take a tumultuous turn. To eliminate their strong European accents, executives hire a dialect coach while the duo revels in their newfound lavish lifestyle. However, alongside rising fame comes a troubling inclination towards drug use and reckless behavior, leading them to gain a tarnished reputation. Their former band, Numarx, left infuriated by the unauthorized usage of their song, has no legal recourse due to a lack of publishing rights, intensifying the tension bubbling beneath the surface.
As fame continues to rise, Rob receives a call from someone claiming to be his biological father, but disillusionment sets in as he learns it is merely a con for financial gain. Back in Germany, Frank grapples with the anxiety of having his deception revealed and pressures Milli Vanilli to return home—a request they flatly refuse. Their success remains largely intact until a technical malfunction during their Club MTV tour causes their lip-sync performance to falter. However, hits like “Baby Don’t Forget My Number,” “Blame It On The Rain,” and “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” continue to fuel their prominence.
Despite their fame, tension escalates when the originally unacknowledged session singers, Brad Howell and John Davis, express anger over their lack of recognition amidst the glowing accolades received by Milli Vanilli, especially after winning a Grammy for Best New Artist. With rising conflicts and threats of revealing their true vocal identities looming, Frank restricts them from using the Milli Vanilli name for an upcoming tour.
Determined and facing pressure, Frank calls a press conference in New York where he shockingly announces that Milli Vanilli did not sing on their album. This revelation causes an uproar, resulting in a swift backlash from fans, the deletion of their music catalogue by Arista, and the revocation of their Grammy award. Meanwhile, as Numarx expresses glee at regaining their publishing rights, Rob spirals further into addiction while the ever-conscientious Fab moves out in an attempt to save himself from the chaos.
After serving time for theft, Rob returns to Germany, where Frank offers him rehab help, but tragically, Rob succumbs to an overdose, devastating Fab. At the funeral, Rob’s sister Carmen Pilatus is angered to see Frank amongst the mourners, even as Fab remains absent, overwhelmed by guilt and despair.
In a reflective narration, Fab expresses his sorrow to Rob for abandoning him in his time of need, claiming it was necessary for his own survival. Rob reassures him, deflecting blame for their struggles. The film culminates with a bittersweet scene as Milli Vanilli performs “Girl You Know It’s True,” granting their audience a façade of joy, leaving the complexities of their reality behind.
