Zara Fernandes and Chandni Raza are two aspiring actresses in 1960s Bombay who are about to make their film debuts on the same day. Chandni’s film Reena Mera Naam becomes a box office hit, while Zara’s Ujjwal Nirmal Sheetal flops, stirring resentment in Zara who begins to see herself as superior to all the new talent. A heated clash erupts between the two after an awards party, culminating in a physical fight. That same night, Zara is murdered, and the blame immediately falls on Chandni, who has no way to prove her innocence.
Ravi Kumar, Chandni’s lover and an ex-cop who was dismissed after a controversial shooting of a parliamentarian, now works as an actor and takes it upon himself to uncover the real killer to save his beloved. The suspect list is crowded, including Virmaan, Chandni’s ex-boyfriend, Subba Prasad, Zara’s film director, and Kenny Damania, a music director who carried on an affair with Zara, along with many others.
As Ravi digs deeper, the truth begins to emerge. After the quarrel, Zara heads to a terrace and encounters KD, hinting that their affair was ongoing. KD’s wife Shabnam starts searching for him, and in a panic KD tries to flee, accidentally pushing Zara over the edge. Zara’s body lands outside Subba Prasad’s window, and Subba Prasad lets her fall, hoping the incident will bring attention to his own flop film.
KD and Subba Prasad are convicted: KD receives seven years, Subba Prasad a life sentence. When the court empties, Chandni confesses her love for Ravi. Ravi reveals that he always suspected Chandni, and in a flashback it’s shown that Zara survived the fall after Subba Prasad let her go. Enraged and resentful, Chandni then strikes Zara on the head with a glass bottle, finally killing her.
