The film intricately explores the meteoric rise and dramatic fall of Robert “Rob” Pilatus and Fabrice “Fab” Morvan, the duo behind the infamous pop group Milli Vanilli, during the vibrant music scene of the late 1980s. It presents a rich tapestry of interviews featuring key figures such as Diane Warren, the talented producer Timbaland, and the two men themselves through archival recordings. We witness their journey starting from their difficult childhoods, which both young men faced, as they first crossed paths in Munich, Germany—a place known for its limited diversity. This backdrop sets the stage for a deep, brotherly bond between them.

As aspiring dancers, they strive to carve a niche for themselves in the music industry and eventually form their own pop duo, sporting distinctive long braids that become iconic to their brand. However, the turning point arrives when record producer Frank Farian offers them a recording contract that seems too good to pass up. In a twist of fate, and to their dismay, they discover that they are destined to lip-sync to the pre-recorded voices of other singers—a revelation that they learn only after hastily signing contracts without fully understanding the implications. Despite their disappointment and inability to break free from the contract without incurring significant financial losses, Ingrid Segieth, Farian’s business partner and then-girlfriend, asserts that they willingly embraced the act of lip-syncing from the outset.

The name Milli Vanilli, which draws inspiration from Segieth’s nickname “Milli,” becomes synonymous with their music. They launch their album All or Nothing in Europe, which is later revamped and introduced to American audiences as Girl You Know It’s True. The album becomes a sensation, achieving a remarkable 6x Platinum status in 1989 and selling over 8 million copies globally.

However, as they bask in the glow of their newfound fame, challenges arise. The duo’s notable accents and limited command of English during interviews stir doubts about the authenticity of Milli Vanilli, a perception that turns into reality when an embarrassing incident occurs at a live concert—one where a vocal track malfunctions. In a bid to salvage their reputation, Arista Records scrambles to handle the fallout, attempting to mitigate any negative publicity that could compromise the integrity of the band.

Despite these challenges, Milli Vanilli is honored as Best New Artist at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards in 1990. However, both Morvan and Pilatus are eager to showcase their true vocal talents on their subsequent album. Their request, however, meets refusal from Farian, prompting them to demand a more lucrative deal in hopes of negotiating their way out of the constricting contracts. But in a shocking revelation, Farian chooses to expose the truth to the media, plunging the group into scandal.

As the reality of their situation unfolds, the duo faces a harsh backlash, resulting in them being stripped of their Grammy Award. The music industry turns its back on them, as they bear the brunt of public outrage while the producers behind the scenes escape largely unscathed. The documentary dives deep into the aftermath, revealing that Clive Davis staunchly denies any prior knowledge of the lip-syncing ruse, even though interviews reveal Arista was aware of the truth six months prior to the awards.

In the wake of the fallout, Farian releases The Moment of Truth, featuring a new ensemble calling themselves “the Real Milli Vanilli,” which includes some of the original studio singers alongside new talent chosen primarily for their looks. Meanwhile, Pilatus and Morvan attempt to reclaim their identities with the album Rob & Fab, showcasing their genuine vocals. Sadly, it proves to be a commercial failure, selling a mere 2,000 copies, leading to the dissolution of their partnership.

In the subsequent years, Pilatus grapples with severe mental health challenges and substance abuse issues, culminating in a tragic overdose after a night of drinking and taking pills. It is Ingrid Segieth who discovers him lifeless on the floor of his hotel room during a wellness check.

Conversely, Morvan manages to fare somewhat better, though he too struggles for recognition as an authentic musician. He relocates to the Netherlands, where he builds a new life, marries, and raises a family. Ultimately, he states that he no longer carries the weight of shame for his past with Milli Vanilli, embracing his journey with newfound resilience and pride.
