Notorious (2009) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Notorious (2009), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens on March 8, 1997, in Los Angeles, where a lively party pulsates to the beats of the popular song Hypnotize. Among the attendees is Biggie Smalls, who is relaxing in a chair, cigar in hand, while energetic dancers, including Faith Evans and Puff Daddy, entertain the crowd. In a brief moment of joy, Biggie, Puff Daddy, and their gang cruise around town, drawing the attention of admirers. However, the fun abruptly turns to horror when a black Chevy Impala pulls up, unleashing a hail of bullets directed at Biggie.

As the scene fades, the narrative flashes back to 1983, where we meet young Biggie, enduring the harsh realities of childhood, including mockery from his classmates while he channels his thoughts into writing songs. His mother, Voletta Wallace, confronts the ghost of his father, who abandoned them years ago, leading to a confrontation that profoundly impacts Biggie. Soon, the allure of the streets entices him, pushing him into a life of hustling and drugs.

Fast forward to 1990, at seventeen, Biggie teams up with his close friends, D-Roc (played by Dennis L.A. White) and Lil Cease. His charisma shines through as he triumphs in a street rap competition, where he first lays eyes on Lil Kim, igniting a spark between them. But when his mother uncovers the harsh realities of his life choices, she is forced to kick him out of their home. Left to fend for himself, Biggie quickly learns the ropes of making money in a difficult world.

After serving a two- to three-year prison sentence, Biggie reunites with his girlfriend, Janet, and their newborn daughter. With his mother’s forgiveness, he reconnects with D-Roc and Lil Cease, eventually recording a demo titled Microphone Murder. It is not long before he meets Puff Daddy, an ambitious producer eager to help Biggie achieve fame and fortune. Their partnership begins as Puff Daddy introduces Biggie to the industry and promises that a record deal is just around the corner.

Reality soon strikes again when a brush with the law forces D-Roc to take a fall for Biggie. As he mounts a comeback, Biggie dives into creating new music. Puff Daddy eventually starts his own label, Bad Boy Records, prompting Biggie to record his first album. After a light-hearted conversation, Puff Daddy convinces Biggie to record a single titled Juicy, which ultimately becomes a defining track, despite early skepticism from Biggie’s friends.

Meanwhile, Biggie and Faith Evans cross paths during a photoshoot. Their whirlwind romance leads to a quick marriage, yet Biggie’s responsibilities to his first child with Janet linger. Tensions rise as Biggie’s friendships deepen with Tupac Shakur, who is a prominent figure in the rap scene. The release of Biggie’s album Ready To Die skyrockets his career, yet personal relationships, including the one with Faith, begin to strain.

As animosities grow, a feud develops between East and West Coast artists, primarily fueled by the paper trail of leaked recordings. The camaraderie between Biggie and Tupac deteriorates amidst the chaos. Tragedy strikes when Tupac is murdered in 1996, leaving Biggie and their circle in shock, further complicating Biggie’s tribulations regarding his relationships and his own identity.

In a somber twist of fate, as Biggie promotes his upcoming album Life After Death in Los Angeles, he receives alarming death threats. One fateful night, while leaving an awards show, tragedy strikes—an assailant opens fire on Biggie’s vehicle, leaving him fatally injured. The aftermath unfolds in heart-wrenching scenes as family, friends, and fans mourn the loss of a hip-hop legend at his funeral. Amid the grief, a poignant moment occurs as Voletta Wallace reflects on her late son’s legacy, hearing his voice through a nearby boy playing Juicy, encapsulating the bittersweet nature of his enduring impact in the music world.
