What Happens in Khandan: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Khandan (1965) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In a sprawling rural estate, two brothers, Jeevandas Ramswaroop Lal and Shankar Ramswaroop Lal, inherit a substantial tract of farmland when their father Ramswaroop Lal dies. Bhagwanti J. Lal becomes Jeevandas's wife, but the couple remains childless, while Shankar's wife Parvati has two sons, Govind and Shyam.

Years pass. Govind suffers an accident—a jolt of electricity—that leaves his right hand paralyzed. He and Radha, his wife, become part of the next generation that grows up within the family.

Many years on, Shyam goes to the city to study and returns to find the family divided into two camps: on one side, Jeevandas, Bhagwanti, Shyam, Navrangi, and Neelima; on the other, Govind, Radha, Shankar, and Parvati. Old resentments have turned into practical debts and fragile loyalties.

Seeking to improve the finances, Jeevandas borrows money from Shyam to buy an elephant, a move that heightens tensions and foreshadows difficult choices ahead.

Navrangi, aligned with Jeevandas, envisions staging a carnival act around the elephant. The plan is risky: the show would involve a boy being tossed from the animal’s trunk and would use Govind’s son, raising the stakes for everyone involved.

The plot thickens when Navrangi abducts Navjeevandas Lal. Govind and Radha hurry to the carnival and manage to rescue Navjeevandas, but the confrontation that follows sees Navrangi attack Govind. Yet Govind regains his strength and fights back, jolting the family with the possibility that the rift can be bridged.

As the truth emerges, Jeevandas and the others realize Navrangi started the division that fractured their home. Navrangi is eventually arrested, and Govind and Shyam join forces to tear down the wall that had split the house in two, both literally and figuratively.

In the end, the entire family gathers, offering a shared prayer and reaffirming their unity, illustrating that reconciliation can outlast years of conflict.

Khandan Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Khandan (1965): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did the family split into two camps?

The family divided over time due to accumulating debts, conflicting loyalties, and old resentments that crystallized into separate factions. Jeevandas, Bhagwanti, Shyam, Navrangi, and Neelima formed one side, while Govind, Radha, Shankar, and Parvati formed the other. The tensions were fueled by financial disputes and suspicion between the two groups.

Foreshadowing: The rift was foreshadowed by Jeevandas borrowing money from Shyam to purchase an elephant, which heightened existing tensions.

Q2

How did Govind's paralysis suddenly heal?

Govind's right hand was paralyzed from an electric shock accident years earlier. During the confrontation at the carnival when Navrangi attacked him while he was rescuing his son Navjeevandas, Govind was jolted out of his paralysis and regained movement in his hand, allowing him to fight back against Navrangi.

Foreshadowing: The accident that caused Govind's paralysis occurred early in the timeline, setting up this dramatic recovery moment.

Q3

Why did Navrangi abduct Navjeevandas?

Navrangi abducted Navjeevandas, Govind's young son, to use him in the dangerous carnival act she had planned with the elephant. The act involved tossing a boy from the animal's trunk, and using Navjeevandas raised the stakes and created leverage over Govind's family.

Foreshadowing: Navrangi's carnival plan explicitly involved using Govind's son in the dangerous elephant act, foreshadowing the abduction.

Q4

How was Navrangi responsible for the family division?

As the truth emerged, Jeevandas and the family realized that Navrangi had started the division that fractured their home. She had been manipulating situations and creating discord between the two camps, though the specific methods are not detailed in the summary.

Foreshadowing: Navrangi's alignment with Jeevandas's camp and her manipulative actions throughout the story hinted at her role in sowing discord.

  • navrangi
  • division
  • manipulation

Q5

Why did Jeevandas borrow money from Shyam to buy an elephant?

Jeevandas borrowed money from Shyam to purchase an elephant as a financial venture, seeking to improve the family's fortunes. The elephant was intended to be used for a carnival show, which Navrangi helped plan, though the plan ultimately proved dangerous.

Q6

What triggered the family reconciliation?

The reconciliation was triggered when the family uncovered Navrangi's role in causing the division. After Govind and Shyam fought together to rescue Navjeevandas and defeat Navrangi, they tore down the literal wall that had split the house in two, symbolizing their united front. The arrest of Navrangi removed the source of manipulation, allowing the family to reunite.

Q7

Why was Shyam's return from the city significant?

Shyam went to the city to study and returned to find the family already divided into two camps. His return added complexity because he was aligned with Jeevandas but also had financial leverage through the money he had lent for the elephant purchase, making him a key figure in the family's ongoing tensions.

Q8

How did Govind's paralysis affect his role in the family?

After Govind suffered the electric shock accident that paralyzed his right hand, his role in the family became complicated. He married Radha and had a son Navjeevandas, but his disability likely affected his ability to work and participate fully in family affairs. The paralysis also made him vulnerable when Navrangi targeted his son for the carnival act.

Foreshadowing: The early accident that paralyzed Govind directly contributed to his vulnerability and the stakes of the abduction plot.

Q9

Why did Jeevandas and Bhagwanti remaining childless matter?

Jeevandas and Bhagwanti remained childless throughout their marriage, which created tension in the inheritance dynamics. Meanwhile, Shankar and Parvati had two sons, Govind and Shyam, who became the heirs and central figures in the family's ongoing story. The lack of an heir from Jeevandas's line contributed to the complex family dynamics.

Foreshadowing: The childless marriage of Jeevandas and Bhagwanti was established early and shaped the family's succession concerns.
