In 2006, the story begins with Vasudevan, his wife Shanthi, and their teenage children, Prabhu and Aarthi, moving into a modest rented house near St. Thomas Mount in Chennai. The family faces the common hardships of urban life, with Prabhu feeling increasingly discontented with their small living space, especially as the cost of rent continues to climb in the bustling city. Despite his frustration, Vasudevan encourages his son to accept the situation and focus on their collective goal: saving enough money to buy their own house.
Vasudevan has managed to save about ₹7.5 lakh (which is roughly equivalent to ₹24 lakh or around US$28,000 in 2023) and is actively searching for a house in the outskirts of Chennai that aligns with their budget. However, he prefers a house in the city itself, which is priced around ₹15 lakh (equivalent to ₹48 lakh or US$57,000 in 2023), creating a dilemma for the family’s plans. Aarthi, a diligent girl, computes that saving ₹25,000 per month (approximately ₹80,000 or US$950 in 2023), alongside selling Shanthi’s jewelry, would be necessary to reach their dream. To help achieve this, Vasudevan receives a raise with overtime pay from his boss, Mehta, and Shanthi begins preparing snacks to sell locally.
Prabhu struggles academically, prompting his father to enroll him in a tuition center for ₹1,000 per month. This effort begins to bear fruit as Prabhu’s grades improve, especially with the support of his crush, Aishwarya "Aishu". Still, during his public exams, Prabhu’s nerves get the better of him, resulting in an average score that disappoints the family. Aishu also faces setbacks, failing her exams and leaving town without notifying Prabhu. The family’s disappointment intensifies, and Vasudevan vents his frustration on the house owner.
In an effort to get Prabhu into engineering college, the family spends their savings on the management quota, but circumstances worsen when Vasudevan gets evicted in 2007 due to financial strain, moving to a smaller house in Pallavaram. During college admissions, Prabhu is advised to pursue IT instead of his initial interest in mechanical engineering, leading to struggles and eventually failing an exam. Meanwhile, Aarthi excels in her SSLC exams, but she chooses to remain in a government school to help the family save money rather than transferring to a private institution, showing her dedication.
By 2008, Vasudevan has saved ₹15 lakh but faces a harsh reality: houses now cost around ₹25 lakh owing to increased property values, dashing their hopes of immediate ownership. Prabhu feels like a failure and contemplates quitting education, but with his father’s encouragement, he resolves to persevere. Together with his friend Kalai, Prabhu begins part-time work at a lathe shop to support his studies. When Mehta is hospitalized, his son takes over the business, and Vasudevan is tasked with learning Tally software. Aarthi joins him at a computer coaching center, and they both pass the Tally exam.
However, Vasudevan’s health deteriorates under the stress, resulting in a heart attack that requires surgery and drains their remaining savings. To support the family, Vasudevan seeks help from his brother, Murali (/actor/subbu-panchu), who agrees but demands Prabhu’s job offer letter for security. Prabhu, despite performing well in his interviews, fails at the final stage due to bad preparation habits, while his friend Kalai secures a position at Zenithcode. This failure deeply affects the family’s morale, and later floods damage their home, forcing them to relocate to Perungalathur.
After Mehta’s death in 2011, Vasudevan loses his job, and Prabhu takes on odd jobs to support the family. His attempts at competitive exams prove futile, but Kalai helps him land an interview, which Prabhu attends confidently—ultimately getting the job and becoming a permanent employee. As their financial situation improves over five years, they plan to buy a flat in Guduvancheri with a home loan.
However, Murali proposes a marriage alliance for Aarthi, prompting Vasudevan to delay their house plans and focus on her wedding instead. Prabhu encourages Aarthi to accept the proposal, and she gets married to Sundar’s daughter, Madhu. During wedding preparations, Prabhu unexpectedly encounters Aishu—now working as a salesgirl—and they reconnect. She reveals that her mother was hospitalized during exams due to her father’s abuse, which caused her to distance herself from Prabhu. Regretting their missed chance, Prabhu proposes to Aishu, cancelling his engagement to Madhu.
Fast forward to 2021, Prabhu and Aishu are happily married, but Vasudevan has stopped speaking to them. Meanwhile, Aarthi faces domestic abuse from her in-laws and returns to Vasudevan’s house with her daughter. She admits she hid her suffering, feeling guilty for delaying their dream of owning a house. Slowly, Vasudevan begins reconnecting with Aishu, and Aarthi helps rebuild their family bonds.
At work, Prabhu encounters a vindictive manager who refuses him an appraisal, making him hesitant about signing the housing loan due to his dissatisfaction with his job. He shares his desire for a simpler, peaceful life, free from pursuit of wealth, which Vasudevan understands and supports. Inspired by Aishu, Prabhu then decides to switch careers, studying mechanical engineering instead of remaining in IT. Aarthi, meanwhile, chooses a new path—applying for divorce and preparing for banking exams, eventually landing a job as an banking associate. Prabhu earns his professional degree and begins a new chapter.
By 2027, Prabhu is now a successful mechanical engineer and a respected technician. The family finally moves into their new home, fulfilling his father’s lifelong dream. The film concludes with Vasudevan happily unpacking the nameplate "Vasudevan & Family" as Aarthi begins arranging the rooms, symbolizing a fresh start and the realization of their collective perseverance and hope.
