On a dark drive along the northern California coastline, Dan Merrick and his wife Judith Merrick are pulled into a severe car crash that leaves Dan with brain trauma and psychogenic amnesia. After extensive plastic surgery, he returns home, dependent on Judith’s care as he pieces together who he was before the accident. The path to recovery is not straightforward, and Dan leans on those closest to him to reconstruct a life that feels almost unfamiliar.

As he grapples with fragmented memories, Dan relies on his trusted circle to help fill in the blanks, including his business partner Jeb Scott and Jeb’s wife, Jenny Scott. Frequent flashes trick him into believing they are clues to the events leading up to the crash. Yet the more he recalls, the more inconsistencies he uncovers about his former self, casting doubt on everything he believes about his past.

A turning point arrives when Dan discovers photographs of Judith sleeping with another man and a costly bill to a pet store. The bill points toward a private investigator who supposedly uncovered Judith’s affair with Jack Stanton. Motivated by suspicion and a growing sense of danger, Dan follows Judith to a rendezvous with Stanton, while a sense of foreboding hangs over him. Judith then diverts toward an old shipwreck slated for removal by Dan’s company, and Dan postpones the wreck’s removal, convinced it holds a key to his memory.

Tensions escalate as Jenny accuses Judith of engineering the accident to remove Dan from their lives, and Dan, with Gus Klein by his side, sets up a wiretap to monitor Judith’s movements. The pursuit leads Dan to a hotel where Judith and Stanton were to meet, though Stanton slips away, triggering a tense pursuit through a wooded area. Gunfire erupts from Stanton’s car, and Dan and Gus crash while Stanton escapes into the night.

Back at home, Dan arms himself and waits. The moment arrives when an intruder appears—Judith, masquerading as Stanton. She claims that Stanton is really dead, killed by Dan on the night of the accident, and that she and Dan buried the truth by disposing of Stanton’s body in the shipwreck. When Dan reveals he had postponed the ship’s removal, Judith’s calm façade dissolves into hysteria, and she suggests they should run together.

A phone call from Jenny pulls Dan back toward real life, but upon arrival he discovers Jenny dead. Gus, who has followed Dan, confronts him at gunpoint, thinking Dan killed Stanton. Desperate to live, Dan persuades Gus to accompany him to the shipwreck, where a chemical storage container is revealed. There, a body identical to Dan surfaces, and Dan realizes the shocking truth: he is not Dan Merrick at all—he is actually Jack Stanton.

A flashback then unveils a brutal sequence: an abusive Dan confronted Judith with evidence of her infidelity. Judith called for help, but Jack arrived too late to prevent her husband’s murder. Jack wanted to go to the police, but Judith forced him to help cover up the crime and hide Dan’s body. Jack’s insistence on leaving the tangled relationship angered Judith, who caused the crash herself.

Judith had believed the chemical would dissolve Dan’s body, but it turned out to be formaldehyde, which preserved him. In a brutal turn, Judith shoots Gus and forces Jack to flee with her. She drives along the same coastal road, confessing to Jenny’s murder and revealing she had everything figured out—except for the willingness to be killed herself.

The police helicopter finally arrives as an injured Gus emerges from the water, having survived his fall thanks to his asthma inhaler. He and Jack board the helicopter, with Gus referring to Jack as Dan and hinting at securing Merrick’s fortune for him. The rotor lifts the helicopter over the wreckage and the burning car, heading away toward San Francisco, leaving the fate of the two men—and the truth of what became of Dan Merrick—in the air.
