On a fog-enshrouded night, Chandrashekhar Navin Nischol is behind the wheel and pushes his car to the limit, only to careen into a crash that leaves him shaken and seeking help. He stumbles toward a nearby house, hoping for aid, but the door is unresponsive and the atmosphere is unnervingly quiet. Inside, he discovers the lifeless body of a wheelchair-using man, and nearby stands a striking, young woman with a gun in hand. Rani Zeenat Aman declares that the dead man is her husband and that she has killed him, then implores Chandrashekhar to call the police.

Intrigued and unsettled, Chandrashekhar asks Rani to recount the events. She explains that Thakur Ranjit Singh Danny Denzongpa, her husband, was cruel and abusive, offending both family and animals, even shooting cats and dogs for sport, which is why the house seemed to wake no one after the gunshot. On this night, after a heated quarrel, when Ranjit threatened to shoot her, she fought to wrench the gun away. In the struggle that followed, Ranjit was accidentally shot and killed.

Seeing an opportunity to help, Chandrashekhar agrees to assist Rani and the two hatch a plan to misdirect the investigation. They stage a robbery to frame the murder as a theft that went wrong, crafting a convincing alibi that places the fatal act at a different time. When the police arrive, Chandrashekhar tells them he encountered a man leaving the house who dropped a gun; because the night is thick with fog, he cannot positively identify the stranger.

The police’s early theory shifts toward an insider’s crime, since the thief seems to know the layout of the house. Among the clues are the deceased man’s pocket watch, an empty cigar container, and a tea tray bearing fingerprints. The investigators quickly connect the cigar container and the prints to Suresh Saxena Sanjay Khanna, a prominent lawyer and a family friend. The case also reveals that Suresh had been having an affair with Rani. While Suresh denies being at the house that night and claims to have been at a party he hosted, inquiries uncover a phone call to him from a woman and a roughly hour-long absence from the party.

When the police show Chandrashekhar Suresh’s photograph and press him for recognition, Chandrashekhar maintains his uncertain stance, declining to identify the man he encountered. Rani then recounts how she first met Suresh when he prevented her from leaping off a cliff, a gesture that drew them together. Suresh soon befriended Ranjit and became a regular visitor, and the two lovers hoped their relationship could endure, even as Ranjit’s political ambitions began to loom over them. On the night of the murder, Rani makes a late-night call to warn Suresh at his party. Later, after she steps out of the shower, she hears Suresh and Ranjit arguing from upstairs; the airplane’s roar drowns out their voices, and by the time she reaches downstairs, Suresh has left. A confrontation with her husband ends with Ranjit’s death at the hands of the struggle, and Chandrashekhar, who has just entered, witnesses the aftermath.

The authorities arrest Suresh and press a case that centers on motive—an illicit romance that supposedly put him in the house at the time of the crime. The prosecution ties the pocket watch’s stopped time to the murder’s actual hour and introduces a second shot intended to mislead the household. As evidence tightens around Suresh, Rani begins to crack and eventually confesses, urging the court to recall Chandrashekhar to verify her story. The case is adjourned until the next day, and that night a nun visits the courtroom, signaling that deeper truths are about to surface.

In the subsequent hearing, Chandrashekhar testifies to a sequence that aligns with Rani’s account: she killed Ranjit in self-defense. The nun accompanies him, and the truth about their shared past gradually emerges. Chandrashekhar reveals a former friendship and business tie with Ranjit, along with a hidden romance with a woman named Kiran, who becomes central to the motive for his earlier imprisonment. Ranjit’s cruel schemes culminated in his framing of Chandrashekhar and five years in prison. Upon release, Chandrashekhar learns that Ranjit had raped Kiran and that she killed herself in despair. He had resolved to seek vengeance, and the confrontation that follows results in a fatal accident when Ranjit is killed as a gun goes off in a tense moment.

Chandrashekhar leaves, only to realize he forgot his wallet at Ranjit’s house. He returns to recover it, deliberately steering his car toward danger by crashing into a tree and sliding into a trench. Returning under the pretense of needing to use the phone, he finds Rani waiting with the gun, prepared to take the blame to protect Suresh, believing he was the killer. The court asks for proof, and the nun—who is revealed to be Kiran, the woman Chandrashekhar once loved—steps forward, explaining how she survived and chose a life of devotion. With these revelations, the court finds the actions to be self-defense and frees Chandrashekhar and Suresh. In the end, Rani and Suresh reunite, while Kiran departs and Chandrashekhar watches them go, a quiet salute to a complicated chain of love, betrayal, and vengeance.
