The movie opens with Sreenivasan Rahman arriving in Kolkata in search of Nandakumar Varma, who disappeared five years ago. He finally locates Mammootty as Nandakumar Varma, who is living in a desolate state. Rahman urges him to return to Kerala, but he resists until the pressure becomes overwhelming, and at last he agrees to go back. Once back, the narrative shifts into a flashback that reveals the chain of events that shattered Nandakumar’s life.

In the city, Nandakumar Varma is a college professor who left his village in Kerala for his job. He shares a residence with Rahman, a colleague, and must contend with a mischievous gang of girls led by Shruthi. Nandakumar maintains a strict, no-nonsense demeanor, while the pranks and schemes of the students test his patience. Simultaneously, he leads a second, private life in his home village, where he tends to his paralyzed fiancée, Uma Maheshwari, whose medical expenses push him to take up this demanding job at the college. The tension between his professional responsibilities and personal obligations forms the emotional spine of the story.

As the clash with Shruthi and her group intensifies, Shruthi develops real feelings for him and confesses them, though he initially dismisses them as a teenage fancy. Uma’s condition begins to improve, and she regains the ability to walk. To help Shruthi understand the depth of Nandakumar’s life, he takes the gang on a trip to his picturesque village, with the goal of introducing Shruthi to Uma and perhaps softening her stance. The sight of the warmth between Uma and Nandakumar unsettles Shruthi, leaving her changed. Upon returning, Shruthi secretly visits Uma and reveals her own feelings for Nandakumar, accusing Uma of selfishness and of forcing him to sacrifice his life and happiness for her sake. Uma experiences a mental shock from Shruthi’s vitriolic confrontation, triggering a second stroke. She becomes paralyzed again, and doctors lose hope. In a desperate moment, she compels Nandakumar to marry Shruthi, and he agrees reluctantly.

After the marriage, Shruthi expresses remorse and reveals to Nandakumar her discreet meeting with Uma. Enraged by this revelation, he slaps Shruthi and leaves his home, wandering through places as if lost.

In the present, Rahman guides Nandakumar back to his home, where he discovers Uma in improved health, caring for his child who is also named Shruthi. The revelation that Shruthi had taken her own life four years earlier after the tumult she helped unleash casts a long shadows over the past, yet Nandakumar slowly finds a path toward forgiveness.
