Dan Mueller, a hardworking construction worker, is grappling with a storm of emotions stemming from the turbulent life of his teenage daughter, Daisy, who is embroiled in her own disciplinary issues. On top of that, he is also entangled in a painful wrongful death lawsuit against Christine Hawthorne, his son Brian’s former girlfriend, whose tragic suicide has left a profound impact on the entire family.

As stress mounts, Dan’s strained emotions bubble over when he is seen confronting a disrespectful driver at work, a moment witnessed by Rita, an actress at the community theater nearby. Understanding his turmoil, Rita invites him to audition for the role of Lord Capulet in the upcoming community production of Romeo and Juliet, which turns out to be a pivotal moment in Dan’s life.

In an effort to reconnect with Daisy, who was once a passionate actor but has since lost interest in theater, Dan seeks her guidance. However, tensions escalate at home when his wife, Sharon, a dedicated teacher and theater director, attempts to plant a garden in their yard at the site of Brian’s suicide. This leads to a fierce argument, with Dan ultimately lashing out at Daisy for her perceived disloyalty.

The theater becomes a sanctuary for Dan, and as he watches Rita, now cast as Juliet, he witnesses an altercation on stage when Romeo insults her regarding her age. This deeply resonates with him as the themes of the play mirror his family’s real-life struggles. After a poignant performance, Dan reveals to the cast the profound grief surrounding Brian’s death, prompting a moment of sympathy from Rita as she embraces him outside the theater, with both Daisy and Sharon observing.

As the pressures of life lead Dan to lie to his family about his whereabouts, he finds himself on mandatory leave from work, ultimately dedicating increasing amounts of time to the production and gaining the role of Romeo. However, the truth is uncovered when Daisy discovers his secret, prompting a series of candid interactions with the ensemble. The atmosphere becomes charged as Sharon confronts Dan about his apparent infidelity upon learning from a coworker about his leave.

The cast decides to transform their production into a one-night-only event, leading to Daisy being cast as Mercutio after Sharon is moved by Dan’s raw talent and allows the performance to occur in the school gym. As the day of the show approaches, Dan grapples with the emotional weight of portraying Romeo’s suicide, but Daisy inspires him to channel the emotional truths behind their shared loss.

During the deposition against the Hawthornes, Dan reveals that Brian and Christine had attempted suicide together the night of Daisy’s last performance, a devastating culmination of events brought on by her family’s move and his emotional unavailability. The depths of Dan’s guilt become apparent as he finally recognizes that he, not Christine, holds responsibility for the tragedy, leading him to drop the lawsuit. This decision infuriates Sharon, who feels that he has squandered their resources and hindered their family’s healing process.

After the climactic performance, which ends with a tearful moment for all involved, including a poignant scene where Dan sees Brian in the background, the Muellers come together to embrace. They partake in a joyous cast party, symbolizing a new chapter in their lives as they head back home, united in their shared grief and love.
