Gopi Nizhalgal Ravi and Hari Vagai Chandrasekar are two unemployed graduates sharing a cramped room in Madras, where life hums with small struggles and quiet ambitions. Gopi is focused on finding a steady job, while Hari, a gifted harmonium player, harbors a bigger dream: to become a film music composer. They scrape by with the help of friends, and their world is soon widened by the arrival of their neighbor Prabhu, a college student who spends his days smoking, painting, and singing. Into this rough-and-tumble routine steps a new family with a daughter, Mahalakshmi, whom everyone calls Maha, a bright presence who will soon become central to the story. Maha Raadhu enters their lives as a spark in the everyday grind, and her bond with Gopi begins to shape the path ahead.

Prabhu and Maha quickly become friends, and Prabhu sets his sights on learning from a veena exponent, a dream that is cut short when the mentor dies just before Prabhu can join the class. In the meantime, Gopi begins giving tuition to Maha, and a tender romance blossoms between them, with Maha guiding him toward a future that could bring stability and happiness. This period of budding love is interrupted by trouble as Gopi, Hari, and Prabhu are arrested for different reasons, testing their friendship and resolve. Maha steps in with resolve, pledging her necklace to bail them out, a gesture that underscores her commitment to the young men and their shared ambitions.

As events unfold, Prabhu attempts to reform and even confronts a college principal—an impulsive act that leads to his dismissal after he slaps the principal for extinguishing a cigarette on a flower. He is chastened by his father, yet Maha remains supportive, and Prabhu clings to the belief that Maha loves him. The tensions within Maha’s family grow as they push her to discontinue her tuition, suspects about her and Gopi lingering in the air. Meanwhile, Hari lands a film break and secures an advance from the producers, and the crew uses part of that money to restore Maha’s treasured necklace. But with the financial winds shifting, Maha’s parents begin to seek a suitable groom for her.

Maha meets Gopi again and urges him to find a job so they can marry, while Hari faces a setback when the financier rejects him as a new, untested music composer. The two friends are eventually evicted from their room for nonpayment of rent and seek shelter with Mani Manivannan, a compassionate rickshaw puller who will soon become a moral anchor in their circle. A telegram arrives for Gopi, revealing that his father has died, a blow that adds gravity to the already heavy days. To cover Singam’s medical needs, Mani’s son Singam Khaja Sharif steps out to earn money, but his attempt is cruelly foiled by fate when he is involved in an accident.

Desperation pushes Hari toward street performance, but the effort fails to pay the bills. Gopi, driven by a rescue mission for Singam, turns to a moneylender to borrow money for Singam’s treatment. The moneylender speaks ill of Singam, provoking Gopi to strike him and take the money, a brutal act that has consequence when Singam dies soon after. The weight of these events closes in as Maha’s parents arrange a marriage for her, and Maha confronts Prabhu with heartbreak: she has never loved him, she loves Gopi. Prabhu, overwhelmed and jaded, feels betrayed by life.

Gopi arrives with grim news of a violent act committed against the moneylender, and Maha and Gopi decide to move forward with their plans to marry. However, their path remains fraught with judgment and action, and the couple is soon arrested for the deaths of Prabhu and the moneylender. In the wake of these events, Hari, overwhelmed by the upheaval and the losses, hurls his harmonium into the sea and runs away, leaving behind a life that has been upended in every possible way.

In this world where friendship, love, and ambition collide, the story traces a difficult arc from shared rooms and small ambitions to tragedy and the heavy costs of desperation. The film captures moments of tenderness between Gopi and Maha, the stubborn resilience of Prabhu, and the rough persistence of Hari as they navigate a city that both sustains and tests them. Through every twist—and the decisions that follow—the film paints a portrait of young people trying to find their place, only to be pulled back by circumstance, duty, and the harsh judgments that accompany love, loyalty, and the pursuit of a dream.
