A decades-spanning romance unfolds as two mainland Chinese newcomers arrive in Hong Kong seeking a livelihood, only to discover that the city’s vast promise can sharpen loneliness into something deeper and more personal. Leon Lai stars as Li Xiao-Jun, a naive Northerner who travels with the hope of bringing his betrothed Fang Xiaoting to Hong Kong, while Maggie Cheung plays Li Qiao, a quick-witted Cantonese-speaking opportunist from Guangzhou who knows how to read the city’s rhythm and use it to her advantage. From their first encounters on crowded streets and in modest rooms, the two quickly sense a shared hunger for belonging and a way to rewrite their fates, even as their paths begin to diverge.

Meanwhile, Au Yeung Pao and Li Qiao pursue their own version of escape, crossing the Pacific to the U.S. as illegal immigrants. The years pass, and almost a decade later, fate places Li Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao back in each other’s orbit, now as lonely immigrants who have each charted their own fragile paths toward a new life in a new country. Li Qiao has secured a Green Card, and Pao’s life in the U.S. is cut short when he is killed in a mugging, halting the life he and Li Qiao had risked so much to build.

The film returns to a quiet, almost ceremonial moment: Li Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao meet again in front of an electronics store, where a display television broadcasts a Teresa Teng music video in the wake of the singer’s death. The moment feels ceremonial, as if a thread from their shared past has reconnected them at the very moment life has moved them onto separate, more solitary paths. The closing image suggests a long memory, with the knowledge that they had once sat back-to-back on that very first train ride to Hong Kong—two people who imagined a future together, only to discover that memory is a city of echoes that outlasts any single life they could have lived.
