Nandagopan, mohanlal, is a highly respected dance teacher at Kerala Kala Mandiram, an institution renowned for its dedication to classical Indian performing arts. His life is deeply intertwined with dance, especially Bharatanatyam, which he has masterfully studied and helped uphold. However, his world is shattered when his wife, Sumangala, tragically takes her own life following a heated argument, leaving Nandagopan overwhelmed with grief and despair. This profound tragedy triggers a dark turn in his life, causing him to descend into alcoholism and to become increasingly rebellious against the rules of the institution he once loved.

As he struggles with his emotional turmoil, Nandagopan’s mood swings make him moody and irritable, often taking out his pain on his students and the school’s management. Among his students is Malavika, a talented and promising Bharatanatyam dancer portrayed by monisha-unni. Despite her dedication, she faces frequent rebukes from Nandagopan over minor mistakes, which discourages her and underscores the complex, sometimes strained teacher-student relationship. Another student, Soman, a Kathakali artist played by yadu-krishnan, is deeply in love with Malavika and observes the tense atmosphere with concern.

On the day of Malavika’s Arangettam—a significant debut performance—Nandagopan, seeking to test her focus and resilience, deliberately creates chaos, which results in the cancellation of the event. This act sparks a protest led by Soman, with other students demanding an apology from Nandagopan or his resignation. During this tumult, Malavika confronts Nandagopan about his attitude as a teacher, prompting him to deliver a heartfelt lecture about the true qualities of a good dancer, emphasizing the importance of Abhinaya (expression) and Natya (dramatic art), drawing from classical texts like Natya Sastra and Abhinaya Darpanam. To demonstrate his point, Nandagopan performs a dance, and his talent and depth impress everyone, silencing the protests and earning their admiration.

Eventually, Malavika requests Nandagopan to become her guru, offering him dakshina (gift/fee) as a gesture of respect and gratitude. He agrees, and their bond grows stronger, leading Malavika’s friends to warn her against becoming overly possessive or emotionally involved. As they spend more time together, Nandagopan starts sharing his past, revealing that he had composed an entire Sita Ramayana dance performance for Sumangala, which stands as a testament to his dedication and creative genius.

Malavika, recognizing his talent and longing to honor his name, expresses her desire to perform Nandagopan’s dance—believing that the world should see his abilities. Under her guidance, he begins preparing her for a grand performance. However, their burgeoning closeness sparks rumors among the students and staff, causing Soman to grow increasingly confrontational and jealous. Feeling that Nandagopan’s influence might overshadow him, Soman plots a deadly act: he secretly adds pesticide to a soft drink bottle, aiming to eliminate Nandagopan during the upcoming performance.

On the day of Malavika’s performance, Nandagopan unexpectedly consumes the poisoned drink. As he starts his dance on stage, the effects of the poison take hold, but he performs with grace and dedication, with Malavika supporting him throughout. Soman’s plot culminates in tragedy when Nandagopan collapses in Malavika’s arms as the dance concludes, just as he begins to picture his wife Sumangala beckoning him, symbolically calling him to join her beyond this life.

In the final moments, Nandagopan’s death is portrayed as a poignant culmination of his turbulent journey—marked by love, loss, creativity, and sacrifice. His life, filled with artistic passion and personal pain, ends poetically on the stage that defined him. This story underscores themes of devotion to art, the destructive power of grief, and the ultimate surrender to fate, leaving a lasting impression of a man whose life was both a dance of triumph and tragedy.
