Scene of the Crime

Thomas, a troubled thirteen-year-old boy, is out in a cemetery one afternoon when an escaped convict named Martin corners him and demands money for train fare. The boy insists he has no money, and the criminal tells him to ask his parents. “My parents are dead,” the boy says, a lie that hides a more complicated truth. In fact, Maurice, [Victor Lanoux], and Lili Ravenel, [Catherine Deneuve], are alive and living nearby, each navigating a tense, fractured family life, with the boy’s grandparents close at hand.

They are separated but their lives remain entangled around the same small circle, and Thomas, scarred by his parents’ divorce, bounces between a Catholic boarding school and weekend visits to his family. He is about to celebrate his first Holy Communion, an event his grandmother—[Danielle Darrieux]—has arranged in the hope that his parents might reconcile. The ceremony becomes a fragile focal point for a family trying to hold itself together, even as the day’s rituals feel hollow in the face of underlying resentments.

Thomas’s early attempts to help Martin pale beside the more immediate drama of his mother’s world. Lili runs a nightclub perched along a river, a place that seems both vibrant and claustrophobic. The boy’s impulsive theft to fund Martin’s plans is noticed by those around him, but when he sees his mother’s sadness, he returns the money and confesses his actions, a moment that exposes a fragile tenderness between mother and son. The boy’s desperation grows, and he even squeezes money from his gruff grandfather, [Jean Bousquet], who only wants to go fishing and stay away from trouble.

Back at the bar by the river, Martin—now with little money and no certainty of safety—meets Lili in a tense, charged encounter. This chance meeting leads to a dangerous alliance: Martin is given a room at a hotel, and Lili becomes entwined in his flight from the law. The truth of the boy’s story begins to unfold for his mother when he recounts what happened in the cemetery; for a moment she fears the tale was only a dream, but the lines soon prove to be all too real. The Holy Communion day continues, but the air is thick with strained emotions and a longing for something to hold onto.

Alice, the women who has long stood by the convicts, arrives with a gun and a plan to help them escape to Tangier. The grim truth of Martin’s past surfaces when he admits to killing Luc, his accomplice, in a desperate bid to protect himself—and the life he’s trying to salvage with Lili. The discovery of the corpse in the graveyard confirms Lili’s doubts, and Martin makes a decisive move to flee town with Alice. Yet something in him hesitates, and he returns to the village, drawn back by a stubborn crowd and a bar that has become a crossroads of fate.

The two of them, drawn together, fall into an uneasy closeness that feels both reckless and inevitable. Lili makes a bold choice to vanish with Martin, leaving behind warnings from her mother and the stubborn pull of her old life. Before the departure, she tells her mother what she plans to do, and her resolve remains intact despite protests. The town’s chaotic energy spills over into the stormy night, as the school’s confessor and Thomas’s teacher press him to reveal everything to the authorities.

That same stormy night, Thomas escapes from the boarding school to see his mother, only to find Lili and Martin together in a moment of intimacy. The boy flees in fear, and Alice, who has appeared again, shoots Martin. In a swift, brutal turn, Alice then drives her car into a wall and dies, cutting the last thread of Martin’s chance at escape.

Dawn brings a quiet, disturbing aftermath. Lili goes to see Thomas, who is now with his father Maurice, though Maurice continues to guard access and fate between them. At the police station, Lili tells the truth and steps into a confinement she had hoped to avoid. The arrest marks a stark ending to a day that began with a boy’s cemetery confession and ends with a mother’s confession to the law. The final image lingers on Thomas riding his bike, a boy who has witnessed more than his share of fear, longing, and the uneasy ways families try to survive together.
