Kamali Shanmugam is a mischievous, carefree girl who grows up in the village of Nadukkaveri in Tamil Nadu, where she attends a Tamil medium state board school. Her world is small and traditional: her father doesn’t believe in educating girls, and her elder brother studies at a convent, which fuels the tension at home when he fails his 12th board exams. Kamali hasn’t had a big dream—until she watches an interview with the CBSE national topper, Ashwin, who goes on to study at IIT Madras. From that moment, she falls hard for Ashwin at first sight and resolves to aim for IIT herself, but she quickly realizes how daunting that path is for a girl from her background.
With her best friend Valli in tow, Kamali hatches a plan to chase her dream while navigating a strict father’s expectations. He lays down a hard rule: if she doesn’t clear the exams, she must marry a relative. A senior teacher, Subramani, pushes Kamali toward guidance from the retired professor Arivudainambi, a figure who initially seems irritated by her audacity. Still, Kamali persists, and a guarded moment of humility unlocks a change: Arivudainambi recognizes her potential to crack the Jee Main and Advanced exams. From that day onward, Kamali embraces regular, disciplined coaching that pays off not only in exams but in her school performance as well. Her hard work culminates in a seat in the B.Tech Computer Science program at IIT Madras.
At the IIT campus, Kamali moves into a hostel room shared with an arrogant peer in the chemical engineering batch. New tensions rise when Kamali’s strong scores threaten her roommate’s ego, and Kamali, still a bit naïve, confesses she came in search of the boy she loves. She then encounters Ashwin in a new setting and becomes fixated on him, while also feeling protective and uneasy about his close friend Priya. As the semester results roll out, Kamali discovers she has failed some exams. The campus whispers nickname her as “Cinderella,” a label that stings deeply because it feels like a distraction from her hard work.
Embarrassed and hurt, Kamali sits in an empty cafeteria, where she overhears [Ashwin] discussing her as Cinderella and his own doubts about being the “joker” in her love story. Heartbreak follows when she realizes a roommate—who had teased her about her romance—was the one spreading the rumor. The tension between them erupts, and Kamali returns to Nadukkaveri, feeling defeated. Yet Arivu’s faith in her never wavers, and she rediscovers her focus in the village where many young students look up to her. The experience humbles her and rekindles her drive to study seriously, letting her set aside thoughts of a romance to aim for real academic success.
Back in college, Kamali’s renewed dedication shines. Her improved grades earn her respect, and she and her roommate even team up to compete in a quiz—an event that becomes a proving ground for her newfound maturity. The inter-IIT National Quiz arrives, and Kamali’s presence alongside [Ashwin] becomes a source of tension and momentum. Kamali initially feels out of place in Delhi, where a stumble—spilling coffee on her dress—threatens to derail her confidence. Yet she remains determined, acknowledging that [Ashwin] has inspired her, and that she strives to prove herself.
A rival contestant from IIT Kanpur, Varun Singh, notices Kamali’s talent and begins to flirt, prompting [Ashwin] to caution her and keep her focus sharp. The final round pairs IIT Madras against IIT Kanpur in a tense showdown broadcast nationwide. Kamali’s team survives a late challenge when Varun chooses to pit her against the competition’s toughest questions. She answers correctly, clinching the win for IIT Madras, much to the relief and pride of her family watching at home. The victory transforms Kamali into a beacon of possibility for the children of Nadukkaveri, proving that dedication can overcome social barriers.
In the lingering moment on the train back from Delhi, the quiet, unspoken truth surfaces: the boy Kamali loved had become [Ashwin], and his gaze lingers as he wonders about the same feelings. The journey—from a village girl with limited prospects to a celebrated student at one of India’s premier institutes—underscores a simple, powerful message: aspiration, hard work, and perseverance can redraw the boundaries of what’s possible.
