Lynn Schaffer, a devoted mother and wife, finds her life unexpectedly turned upside down when she is arrested for a crime she was unaware she had committed. Initially, she treats her arrest with a sense of disbelief and does not take it seriously. Believing herself to be innocent, she defies her lawyer’s advice to accept a plea bargain and instead chooses to go to trial.
To her shock, Lynn is convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalty of 10 years. She is then sent to a women’s prison, where her world becomes drastically more challenging. She leaves behind her husband, Gary Frank, and their daughter Carey to face the harsh realities of incarceration. Inside, she struggles with the lack of privacy and is confronted with the presence of drug addicts and prostitutes, which intensifies her distress.
Soon, Lynn uncovers a disturbing truth: the prison is rife with corruption. She learns that Sergeant Ed Crang [ ] and other security staff frequently abuse inmates sexually, creating a dangerous and oppressive environment. Her first instinct is to oppose this exploitation, but her husband Larry warns her against interfering, suggesting she might be released soon on probation. Despite cautioning her to stay silent, Lynn’s resolve grows stronger when her friend Frannie, portrayed by Kimberly Russell, becomes the third woman to fall victim to abuse.
Seeing that no one is truly safe, Lynn becomes determined to fight back. She enlists the help of her husband, who runs a radio station, and they begin to expose the prison’s dark secrets to the media. Her actions put her under the watchful eye of Sergeant Crang [ ], whoresentfully monitors her every move. His efforts to silence her include denying her visits from her husband and physically assaulting her to discourage her from speaking out.
Lynn also endeavors to gather concrete evidence against the corrupt guards by convincing other inmates to support her cause. However, her fellow prisoners are initially too afraid to step forward, fearing retaliation from Angie, a powerful inmate played by Finola Hughes, who profits from the system by smuggling drugs from the police and being released periodically to work as a prostitute.
The turning point comes when a sympathetic female guard named Sheila provides Lynn with a critical file containing evidence of the corruption. Armed with this information, Lynn prepares to share it with a visiting senator investigating the prison’s practices. Crang and Angie attempt to prevent her from delivering the evidence, but with the support of other inmates and the guard Sheila, she manages to reach the senator.
Through her courageous efforts, more than 20 guards are dismissed and replaced by female staff, signaling a major step toward reform. Ultimately, Lynn’s persistence earns her the chance to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest, protecting her from further harm and bringing justice to those she fought for.
This story highlights her resilience and unwavering spirit in the face of systemic injustice, illustrating the power of determination and solidarity in overcoming corruption and abuse within a flawed system.
