What Happens in The Last Color: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Last Color (2019) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In the city of Varanasi, India, a nine-year-old tightrope walker and flower seller named Chhoti dreams of saving 300 rupees to attend school. She faces daily struggles for survival with her best friend Chintu. Chhoti befriends Noor, Neena Gupta, a widow dressed in white who is prohibited from taking part in any festivities, especially Holi, the Indian festival of colors. Chhoti tries to arrange a meeting between Rudrani Chhetri as Anarkali, a trans woman who is brutally harmed by the local police officer Aslam Shekh named Raja, and Noor. Raja uses threats and coercion to keep them in submission, a power dynamic shaped by fear and corruption. Over time, the friendship between Chhoti and Noor deepens and begins to break down rigid caste barriers, yet Noor and Anarkali never get the chance to meet face to face.

Noor pushes the brave little girl to face life with flying high courage, a commitment to education, and dignity. She shares cherished childhood memories of playing with colors, colors that once brought joy and a sense of belonging. Chhoti promises Noor that this Holi she will shower her with colors, a small ceremony of trust and solidarity. But on Holi’s eve, Noor passes away, and a sweep by the corrupt police leads to Chhoti’s imprisonment by Raja, who tries to pin the murder of Anarkali on the witness to the crime. The film leaves us with the pressing question: will Chhoti be able to keep the promise she made to Noor?

Twenty-four years later, Chhoti has grown into an advocate who fights for reform, focusing on the rehabilitation of street children and widows, and she has earned a landmark victory on behalf of trans women. The Last Color becomes a poignant meditation on promises kept and broken, a friendship that transcends social barriers, and the enduring freedom and resilience of the human spirit.

The Last Color Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about The Last Color (2019): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Noor forbidden from celebrating Holi?

Noor is a widow in Varanasi who lives in white, the traditional color of widowhood in Hindu culture. Widows in some Indian communities are prohibited from participating in festivals like Holi because they are considered inauspicious. This social stigma keeps Noor and other widows isolated from community celebrations, which is why she has not played with colors in years.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, Noor shares vivid memories of playing with colors as a child, showing she once experienced the joy Holi brings.

  • tradition
  • noor
  • varanasi
  • social stigma
Q2

Who is Anarkali and what happens to her?

Anarkali is a trans woman whom Chhoti tries to bring together with Noor as allies against oppression. She is brutally harmed by the corrupt police officer Raja, who uses his power to abuse marginalized people. Raja later murders Anarkali and attempts to pin the crime on Chhoti after she witnesses it.

Foreshadowing: Raja's pattern of threats and coercion against Chhoti, Noor, and Anarkali builds throughout the film, establishing the danger they face.

Q3

Why does the police officer Raja target Chhoti?

Raja targets Chhoti because she witnesses his brutal attack on Anarkali and attempts to organize marginalized women against his corruption. He threatens to rape her if she interferes and later frames her for Anarkali's murder to silence the only witness. His power is built on fear and control over the poor and marginalized residents of Varanasi.

Foreshadowing: Raja's threats escalate from intimidation to direct violence against anyone who challenges his authority.

Q4

What causes Noor's death?

Noor passes away on the eve of Holi. While the exact circumstances of her death are not detailed in the summary, her death occurs during a police sweep led by Raja. The timing is significant because it prevents Noor from experiencing the colors Chhoti promised to shower her with during Holi.

Foreshadowing: Noor's memories of playing with colors as a child and her hopeful waiting for Holi create tragic irony around her death.

  • noor
  • death

Q5

How does Chhoti end up in prison?

Chhoti is imprisoned during a police sweep conducted by Raja. After witnessing Raja murder Anarkali, Raja frames her for the crime to prevent her from testifying against him. The corrupt system allows an innocent child to be jailed for a murder she did not commit, simply because she is a poor street child with no powerful allies.

Foreshadowing: Raja's earlier threats to pin crimes on Chhoti if she interferes foreshadow this frame-up.

  • imprisonment
  • raja
  • murder accusation
  • wrongful arrest
Q6

What does 'fly high' mean in Noor's advice to Chhoti?

When Noor tells Chhoti to 'fly high,' she means to rise above her difficult circumstances through education, dignity, and self-respect. Noor encourages her to pursue schooling, to face life with courage, and to never accept the limitations society tries to impose on her. This phrase becomes a guiding principle for Chhoti's transformation.

Foreshadowing: Noor shares her own childhood memories of joy and possibility through playing with colors, reinforcing the theme of aspiring to something better.

Q7

Why does Chhoti try to bring Anarkali and Noor together?

Chhoti attempts to arrange a meeting between Anarkali and Noor because she sees them as allies who both face oppression, Noor as a widow and Anarkali as a trans woman. She hopes their combined strength could help fight against Raja's corruption and the broader social discrimination they all face. The meeting never happens due to Raja's interference.

Foreshadowing: Chhoti's efforts to unite marginalized women show her early activism and understanding of shared struggles.

Q8

How does Chhoti become an advocate 24 years later?

After being wrongfully imprisoned and experiencing the injustice faced by marginalized people firsthand, Chhoti transforms into a social reform advocate. She dedicates her life to the rehabilitation of street children and widows, drawing strength from Noor's mentorship and her own traumatic experiences. Her journey from child tightrope walker to reform advocate spans 24 years.

Q9

What landmark victory does Chhoti achieve for trans women?

Twenty-four years after the events of the film, Chhoti wins a landmark case on behalf of transgender women. This legal victory represents a significant achievement in the fight for transgender rights in India. The win allows her to push for broader social reforms that protect vulnerable groups including street children and widows.

Foreshadowing: Chhoti's commitment to fighting for those with nowhere to turn, forged through her own suffering, culminates in this victory.

Q10

What happens to Chhoti's promise to splash colors on Noor?

Chhoti promises Noor that she will splash colors on her during Holi as a ceremony of trust and solidarity between them. However, Noor dies on Holi's eve before this promise can be fulfilled. The broken promise becomes a poignant symbol of loss, but also drives Chhoti's lifelong commitment to honoring Noor's memory through her advocacy work.

Foreshadowing: Noor's memories of playing with colors and her joyful anticipation of this Holi make the unfulfilled promise deeply tragic.

Q11

Why does the film jump forward 24 years?

The film jumps 24 years ahead to show the long-term impact of Chhoti's experiences and Noor's mentorship. This nonlinear structure demonstrates how the promise and friendship between Chhoti and Noor shaped her adult life. The time jump transforms the story from a tragic tale of loss into a narrative about resilience and hard-won progress, showing that Chhoti kept her promise to live with dignity and fight for others.
