Twilight’s Last Gleaming

After escaping from a military prison, Gen. Lawrence Dell and his accomplices — Willis Powell, Augie Garvas, and Hoxey — infiltrate a Montana ICBM complex that Dell helped design, aiming to seize control of its nine Titan missiles. The mission spirals out of control when the impulsive [Hoxey] shoots a guard for answering a ringing phone, and Dell responds by killing [Hoxey]. The trio then establishes contact with the U.S. government, avoiding media attention, and pressure the authorities with a demand for a $10 million ransom and a televised public disclosure of a top-secret document.

That document, kept away from the current president but known to certain cabinet members, reveals a stark truth: there was no realistic hope of winning the Vietnam War, yet the U.S. continued fighting to demonstrate to the Soviet Union a steadfast commitment to defeating Communism. This revelation intensifies the political and ethical stakes as the nation weighs crisis management against public accountability and national security.

Dell and his partners disable the complex’s security measures, gaining unfettered access to the launch control and the nine Titan missiles, effectively giving them the power to redirect a major portion of America’s deterrence. Back in the corridors of power, the President President David T. Stevens and his Cabinet grapple with the moral, political, and personal implications of meeting the ransom and exposure demands. They authorize an elite military response led by Gen. Martin MacKenzie to penetrate the ICBM site and incinerate its command center with a low-yield nuclear device, trying to avert a full-scale catastrophe while navigating the chain of command under intense pressure.

However, the infiltration triggers an alarm, and the hasty operation threatens to collapse. Dell seizes the moment, initiating the launch sequence and triggering a tense countdown as the underground silo doors begin to unfold. The situation devolves into a desperate melee when captive guards attempt to overpower the intruders, resulting in the deaths of Augie Garvas and another guard, turning the mission into a high-stakes struggle for control.

In the end, the President agrees to the terms, including being used as a hostage, while Dell and Powell manage their escape from the facility. As the President departs the White House, he instructs the Secretary of Defense to release the secret document should he be killed in the process, a moment felt as much by the nation as by the military planners watching from afar. As snipers close in, Dell and Powell are shot, but so is the President. With his dying breath, the President asks if the document will be released, and the Secretary of Defense is left unable to answer, leaving a haunting question about accountability, truth, and the price of preventing a nuclear catastrophe.
