In the monotony of his role as a night desk clerk at a hotel, Bart Bromley seeks solace through an unusual coping mechanism: observing and mimicking the behaviors of hotel guests via hidden cameras. This quirky ritual helps him navigate his social awkwardness stemming from his diagnosis of Asperger syndrome. During one of his night shifts, he becomes particularly fixated on Karen (Jacque Gray), a new guest whose presence captures his attention. The solitary evenings lead Bart to indulge in ice cream, all while continuing to monitor Karen’s room from his home.
However, his voyeuristic solace is shattered when Bart bears witness to a shocking scene: a mysterious man enters Karen’s room, and a violent confrontation ensues, leaving Bart horrified as he sees Karen brutally attacked. The moment a gun slips from her purse marks a turning point for him as he races back to the hotel in a desperate attempt to save her. Entering through a side door, he is soon found by his coworker Jack (Austin Archer), who stumbles upon the grim sight of Karen lifeless on the bed while Bart sits beside her. In a panic, Bart hastily removes the hidden cameras, unintentionally leaving behind a crucial storage card that could unravel everything.
The following day, Detective Espada (John Leguizamo) interrogates Bart about his actions the previous night. Bart lies, claiming to have gone home after buying ice cream. Yet, Espada’s intuition reveals the truth—Bart’s wallet, which he claims he forgot, makes his story implausible. Undeterred, Bart views the footage from Karen’s room again and notices a distinctive tattoo of a bird on the assailant’s arm, indicating a deeper mystery at play.
As Bart faces the repercussions of the night’s events, he is reassigned to a different hotel. There, he meets Andrea Rivera (Ana de Armas), who playfully acknowledges his Asperger’s and begins to flirty interaction with him. Andrea checks into the hotel, and the next day, Bart discovers that a vital storage card is missing from his belongings—eventually, it finds its way into Espada’s hands.
Determined to stay connected with Andrea, Bart reestablishes his surveillance of her room and shares a seemingly innocent moment with her by the pool. But his joy is short-lived, as he wakes up the next day to find himself transformed—new haircut, added suit, and fresh cologne. Attempting to reconnect with Andrea, he is met with a shocking reality: she is now involved with the same man who terrorized Karen, identifiable by the bird tattoo.
The situation spirals further as authorities raid Bart’s home, seizing all his equipment. Bart asserts that he deleted all incriminating materials before their arrival, yet after Detective Espada leaves, he retrieves a hidden hard drive containing the recording from Karen’s room, suggesting a more complex understanding of the events released.
As he observes Andrea with her new companion, Bart is left aghast; this stranger is none other than Nick (Johnathon Schaech), Karen’s husband, who harbors secrets of his own and wishes to keep Bart quiet at all costs. Unaware of the looming danger, Bart becomes entwined in a web of deceit as he watches a disturbing argument between Nick and Andrea via the surveillance cameras. Spurred by instinct, he rushes to warn Andrea, revealing Nick’s dark double life filled with secrets.
After confronting her with the evidence, Bart’s world takes another turn. Andrea, grappling with the revelation that Nick is responsible for Karen’s death, collapses into tears, seeking solace next to Bart as exhaustion overtakes them both.
When Bart awakens the next morning, he discovers that Andrea has mysteriously vanished, taking the pivotal hard drive that contains the recording from Karen’s room. The only trace of their encounter is a disturbing item left behind—the gun taken from the scene of Karen’s demise, now ominously resting on his bed.
As Nick and Andrea attempt to escape, their journey is abruptly halted when the police pull them over, subsequently uncovering the evidence of their wrongdoing. Meanwhile, Bart blends with the crowd at a nearby mall, practicing the social skills he’s learned from years of observing life through a lens, all while keeping an eye out for any trace of Espada.
This thrilling narrative encapsulates betrayal, deceit, and the unraveling of truths, as Nick’s world begins to crumble, ensnaring him deeper in his own lies.
