Baltimore, Maryland, in the year 1987 finds Terry Lambert (Steve Guttenberg) returning home from a soirée hosted by his employer, Collin Wentworth (Paul Shenar). The time is after midnight, and as he arrives at his apartment near the iconic Washington Monument, he hurriedly tidies up his bachelor pad, casting a glance out the bedroom window to welcome his unexpected visitor, Sylvia Wentworth (Isabelle Huppert), his boss’s beautiful and elegant French wife. Their passionate rendezvous quickly unfolds behind closed doors, culminating in an intimate moment that epitomizes the thrill of their encounter.

However, the night takes a shocking turn when a muffled cry echoes outside, capturing Sylvia’s attention. Peering from the window, horror strikes as she spots a man attempting to abduct a young woman. Panic ensues as Sylvia tries to alert Terry. The window sticks momentarily, creating a tension-filled moment before it gives way with a loud cracking noise, startling the assailant. In the chaos, the young woman seizes the chance to scream for help, forcing the attacker to flee as neighbors rally to assist her. The evening ends with Terry questioning Sylvia about her feelings post-incident. “Any regrets?” he asks, to which she confidently replies, “None. In spite of what happened…or perhaps because of it…it was the most exciting night I can remember.”

Fast forward to the next day, and Terry, late for work at Wentworth Construction, is met with the anxious query of his boss about his whereabouts the previous night. Just as Terry turns to leave, a newspaper catches his eye—tragically revealing that a girl was murdered mere blocks from his apartment the night prior. This discovery weighs heavy on his mind as he meets up with Sylvia again during lunch. They discuss the grim murder case, which seems intertwined with the assault she witnessed. Torn between a desire to help and the risk posed to Sylvia’s reputation, Terry impulsively calls the police, declaring that he witnessed the attack from his window. Although initially alarmed, Sylvia’s excitement about his decision only heightens the tension of the moment.

As detectives Quirke (Carl Lumbly) and Jessup (Frederick Coffin) take Terry’s account seriously, the two incidents become linked in their investigation. The following day, Terry’s lunch meeting with Sylvia further uncovers the emotional turmoil created by their actions, making it clear that the weight of the revelation would forever alter their lives. As the police investigate further, the shadow of doubt looms over Terry, particularly when he finds himself in the chilling and complicated aftermath of the line-up, where Denise Connelly (Elizabeth McGovern), the victim, struggles to identify her assailant, creating a knot of dilemmas for Terry.

That struggle only intensifies when Terry gets caught deeper in the investigation surrounding Chris Henderson (Brad Greenquist), the suspect. His need to pursue justice grows into an obsession, ultimately leading him down a troubling path as he begins to follow Henderson, uncovering connections that entwine him even further into the web of deceit. The more he digs, the more tangled it becomes, until it culminates in a heart-stopping confrontation. Moments later, Terry’s personal life collides with the ongoing investigation when a shocked encounter with Denise leaves him grappling with his feelings toward Sylvia and poses questions about loyalty, trust, and betrayal.

As the story unfolds, Terry constantly juggles his concerns over potential repercussions, pressures from the police, and the complex relationship dynamics with both Sylvia and Denise. Their intertwined fates push Terry toward drastic measures after Henderson makes his menacing presence felt yet again, resulting in a gripping climax at the theater where Sylvia’s tragic downfall occurs. The tension-packed scenes unfold as a desperate Terry scrambles to prevent disaster, leaving him grappling with the haunting outcomes of his actions and those of the people he once trusted.

Through a series of harrowing encounters, including Henderson’s ruthless attempt on Sylvia’s life witnessed by Terry, the film illustrates the themes of justice and consequence, unraveling the consequences of a single night that spiraled into chaos. The finale sees Terry cornered at the mercy of Henderson’s sinister plans, leading to an explosive confrontation that tests his resolve and the very essence of right and wrong. Ultimately, Terry and Denise find solace in each other after the dust settles, sharing a bittersweet reprieve amidst the aftermath of a horrific crime. As the camera pans away to the soaring statue of George Washington, the film concludes with an air of uncertainty—leaving viewers pondering the true nature of justice.
