Anna has spent a decade confined to her childhood home, bound by severe agoraphobia that keeps her from stepping outside. She dedicates her days to caring for her brother, Conrad, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, and maintains a fragile friendship with Dan, who brings daily meals. After Conrad’s death, the two of them share a quiet sense of being trapped—Anna in the house, Dan in his own life—yet they find solace in a momentary understanding. In a bid to help him break free from his circumstances, Anna offers Dan a large sum of money, but he declines, choosing not to uproot his life in that moment.
The day of Conrad’s funeral marks a sharp turn. Three men—Perry, Vance, and J.P.—break into the house in search of the money Anna is believed to be hiding. They quickly realize Anna cannot leave the house, even when she is untied and the door sits right there before her. Their attempt to provoke her fails as she remains an unseen presence, hidden away behind locked rooms and a carefully monitored perimeter. In a brutal attempt to force her out, one of the thieves murders her pet bird, hoping to coerce a confession, but Anna stays silent and resolute.
As the intruders search, Dan arrives—looking for Anna because she didn’t attend Conrad’s funeral. The thieves restrain him and press for information about the money. In a tense turn of events, Anna retaliates, killing Vance and dragging his body to the basement. The others descend after her, and she activates a hidden mechanism that retracts the staircase, sealing the basement behind them. The confrontation intensifies when Dan admits that he told Vance about the money, but not with the intent to rob, only that he had been unable to shake thoughts of Anna. His confession is deeply revealing: he cared for Anna in a way that haunted him, even as he couldn’t escape the pull of the past.
Anna’s next move is ruthless and calculated. She restrains Dan and reveals a dangerous truth: her offer was not a dream of escape for him, but a lure that he could not resist. When the truth comes out, she breaks two of his fingers and tears away his bonds, pushing him into the basement where he suffers a dislocated knee. The other intruders return to the basement, and Perry lends a painful but almost casual help in resetting Dan’s knee before resuming their search. The room fills with the sounds of danger as Anna uses a surveillance system to outsmart them, luring J.P. into a separate bedroom and locking him away. She then confronts Perry and weapons him with a hammer, a sign that she will not be a passive observer of the violence around her.
Perry continues to press, but his injuries and arrogance prove no match for Anna’s resolve. As Anna nears exhaustion, Perry’s own wound catches up to him, and he dies before he can finish her. Dan sees the grim scene—Perry dead, a body in the freezer—and the reality of what has happened settles in. Conrad’s lawyer arrives to check on Anna, and she maintains a careful, composed exterior, convincing the lawyer that Dan is simply working on an old radiator. After the lawyer leaves, Anna traps both Dan and J.P. in a single room, turning the house into a controlled theater where she can observe them from her surveillance vantage point.
From the monitoring cameras, a chilling truth unfolds. J.P. pieces together the core of the family’s dark past: Conrad was a serial killer who lured victims into the basement, where they were killed as Anna watched. Anna confirms the revelation but reframes it in her own terms: all of the victims were child molesters, and so was their father. She remembers the abuse she endured from their father and the violence that led her brother to kill him. The revelation reframes the entire situation and sets the stage for a cruel moral bargain: she will release Dan if he is willing to kill J.P., presenting a gun with a single bullet as the option. Dan refuses, placing both men in a dangerous stalemate.
J.P. seizes the gun and aims at Dan, but Anna, wanting to protect him, tries to persuade him to turn the gun on himself. He laughs at the suggestion and instead targets Dan. Seizing a moment of weakness and distraction, Anna unlocks the door, and Dan and J.P. escape the room.
Driven by a rage that won’t be contained, J.P. returns to exact revenge. He spreads gasoline around the house, intending to burn it all and erase the secrets it holds. He attacks Anna, attempting to strangle her with a pillowcase and hinting at a future attempt at rape after she loses consciousness. Dan arrives just in time, distracting J.P. enough for Anna to grab the gun from the thief’s belt and shoot him. The immediate threat dissipates, and Dan and Anna share a long, searching look before he leaves without a word. With the danger passed for the moment, Anna steps out onto the porch, takes a single, decisive step toward the door, and then sets fire to the house. In that blaze, she burns away the house and the hidden pasts it sheltered, choosing a painful but clear path to release herself from the house’s grip and its long-held secrets.
