Beth’s life takes a tragic turn when she loses her husband, Owen, to suicide. On a fateful day, he takes a boat from their lake house and ends his life with a gun that Beth was unaware he possessed. Overwhelmed by grief, Beth finds herself drowning in sorrow and isolation, spending her nights drinking while sifting through the remnants of Owen’s life. Despite her heartache, she tries to maintain a façade of normalcy by continuing her role as a teacher, much to the worry of her friend Claire and their neighbor, Mel.
Among Owen’s belongings, Beth discovers an ominous suicide note where he cryptically states, > “There is nothing. Nothing is after you. You’re safe now.” This haunting message plagues her as she grapples with his death. As she tries to pick up the pieces of her life, Beth begins to experience bizarre, supernatural occurrences at night that she initially dismisses as mere figments of her imagination, but she gradually realizes these events are hauntingly real. While sorting through Owen’s belongings, she stumbles upon a set of floor plans for a reversed version of their lake house, sparking her curiosity.
In her search for answers, Beth comes across a photograph on Owen’s phone featuring a woman who eerily resembles her. This leads her to suspect infidelity on Owen’s part, and despite Claire’s pleas for her to stop delving into Owen’s past, her determination grows stronger. During a night out with Claire and their colleagues, a vulnerable Beth confesses a pivotal moment from her past: she once died for four minutes in a car accident and encountered “nothing” during that time. Owen had always contested this experience, believing he could shift her perspective before his untimely demise. Beth braves discussions of her own depression and raises concerns that Owen had begun sleepwalking about a year ago, contemplating whether her own emotional struggles had inadvertently affected him.
One fateful night, Beth is awakened by an ethereal force and witnesses terrified women fleeing through the woods. Investigating further, she finds blood on the boat where Owen took his life, intensifying her feeling of an unseen presence. Driven by desperation, she crosses the lake to follow strange lights and discovers an uncanny mirror image of her and Owen’s house where ghostly figures of women linger alongside Owen. Overcome with fear, she loses consciousness and wakes up in her own home the following morning, unresolved and haunted by the previous night’s events.
Upon returning to the mirrored house, she encounters Mel, who expresses deep concern for Beth’s mental state. To her astonishment, the house is unfinished and devoid of life. During her exploration, she retrieves a peculiar statue and confronts Mel, who claims to have never seen the house but reveals he once spotted Owen in the woods accompanied by a woman looking strikingly like Beth. Nevertheless, Beth’s investigation continues as she finds more photographs of women resembling her on Owen’s laptop and identifies the statue she found as an occult voodoo doll. This revelation indicates that Owen had been engaging in research related to trapping demonic entities.
Beth decides to visit the bookstore where Owen had acquired his occult literature and encounters one of the women from Owen’s photos, Madelyne. An enraged Beth confronts her about her involvement with Owen, to which Madelyne fervently denies having any affair. Back at the house, Beth is tormented by the silhouette of Owen, a relentless reminder of her tragic past.
Concerned for her well-being, Claire urges Beth to take a break from the house. Complying with her friend’s advice, she prepares to leave, but before she can escape, she confronts the ghostly presence in the home, demanding to uncover the truth. When Madelyne unexpectedly arrives, she exposes a distressing account of her interaction with Owen, describing how he had invited her to the reversed house. While she claims Owen tried to choke her during an intimate moment, she fled in terror. After Madelyne departs, Beth returns to the house and unearths a terrifying discovery: multiple bodies hidden beneath the floorboards—victims of Owen’s vicious acts against women who resembled her.
Horrified, Beth attempts to contact Claire for help but finds herself unable to reach her. As the mysterious force resumes its harassment, Beth, in a moment of desperation, embraces it, mistaking it for Owen’s spirit. The entity reveals its true nature, explaining that it is what Beth witnessed when she encountered nothingness. It divulges that it tried persuading Owen to eliminate Beth to bring her back to it, while Owen fought against this destiny, creating the mirrored house in a desperate attempt to deceive the darkness. In a twisted revelation, it entrapped Beth in a pose resembling the statue she had recovered.
The following morning, Claire arrives at the house, alarmed by traces of struggle. Upon discovering the gun Owen used for his suicide is missing, she hastens to the dock with Mel, where they find Beth adrift in a boat with the firearm. In an intense confrontation within Nothing’s domain, the demon attempts to coax Beth into joining it by taking her own life. However, Claire’s urgent shouts break through Beth’s trance. Claire rescues her from the boat and they return to the dock, where Beth catches a glimpse of the demon’s outline in the boat. When Mel inquires about her fixation, Beth quietly replies that “it’s nothing,” hinting that she has begun to conquer her grief and reclaim her life amidst the overwhelming darkness.
