In the vibrant landscape of 1995 Hollywood, aspiring screenwriter Robert Sandrich crafts an autobiographical screenplay deeply rooted in the tragic loss of his lover to AIDS-related cerebral tuberculosis. His poignant work catches the eye of studio executive Jeffrey Tishop and his wife Elaine, but Jeffrey, prioritizing commercial viability, insists on a major rewrite. He proposes that Robert transform his lead character from Maurice to Maggie and pivot the story from a gay narrative to a straight one.
Faced with the stark choice of either compromising his artistic vision or losing the chance to bring his story to life, Robert wrestles with his principles. Ultimately, he succumbs to the allure of a $1 million paycheck, allowing modifications to the script that betray its original intent.
As Robert becomes a regular guest in the opulent Malibu home of Jeffrey and Elaine, an intricate web of attraction unfolds. While Jeffrey is drawn to Robert in a more physical sense, Elaine develops a bond that is rich in emotional depth and intellectual connection. However, when she learns about Robert’s compulsive use of Internet chat rooms, she embarks on a clandestine mission. Posing as a gay man, she engages in online dialogues with him, utilizing intimate details that Robert previously shared to convince him that he is communicating with his deceased lover.
As the story progresses, the situation grows more complex when Robert confesses to an affair with Jeffrey, leading Elaine to confront the harsh realities of her seemingly idyllic marriage. This emotional turmoil sets the stage for a disturbing confrontation that spirals into tragedy, forever altering the lives of all involved.
