Johnny is a successful banker living in a San Francisco townhouse with his fiancée, Lisa, who has become disenchanted with their relationship. The tension between them fuels a dangerous dynamic: Lisa begins a secret affair with Johnny’s best friend, Mark, and the couple’s lies and desires slowly pull Johnny into a web of doubt and suspicion. In an attempt to uncover the truth, Johnny attaches a tape recorder to their phone after overhearing Lisa confessing her infidelity to her mother, hoping to identify her lover through the recorded conversations and catch the truth in the raw, intimate details of their calls.

The strain of the situation deepens when Johnny and Mark step in to help Denny, a neighboring college student whom Johnny supports both financially and emotionally. A confrontation with an armed drug dealer, Chris-R, is narrowly resolved with Denny’s safety in mind, and the closeness of Johnny’s circle becomes more complicated when Denny confesses a troubling crush on Lisa. Though Johnny understands the complexity of desire and sympathy, he urges Denny to pursue one of his own classmates instead of chasing Lisa, signaling the beginning of a shift in loyalties within the group.

As the pressure mounts, Lisa begins to make public claims that Johnny has turned physically abusive, sending Johnny into a deep depression. He seeks guidance from both Mark and his psychologist, Peter, hoping to find a way through the storm. The situation becomes more tangled when Mark confides to Peter on a rooftop that he feels guilty about his affair, a confession that escalates when Peter deduces the affair is indeed with Lisa. In a moment of cruelty and control, Mark suspends Peter over the edge of the rooftop before allowing him to retreat, magnifying the sense of danger and moral peril surrounding everyone involved.

At a surprise birthday party for Johnny, the fragile balance shatters when Steven discovers Lisa kissing Mark. To deflect Johnny’s attention, Lisa falsely announces that she and Johnny are expecting a child, a deception designed to dampen the growing tension. The ruse backfires as Lisa and Mark flaunt their affair in front of the guests, sparking a fierce confrontation that ends with Johnny ejecting everyone from the celebration and retreating into silence and anger.

Inside his home, Johnny locks himself in the bathroom and voices a harsh, anguished rebuke to Lisa for betraying him. In a moment of desperation, Lisa calls Mark, seeking the closeness they’ve fought to preserve. Johnny retrieves the cassette recorder he attached to the phone and finally listens to the intimate calls that verify his worst fears. The experience triggers a total nervous breakdown; he erupts in a frenzied destruction of his apartment and, in a devastating turn, takes his own life by shooting himself in the mouth. The tragedy leaves Lisa and Mark standing together in shock, their plans for a future together collapsing around them, while Denny remains nearby as the police arrive and a grim stillness settles over the scene.

In the aftermath, Lisa tells Mark that they are finally free to be together, but Mark rejects her, angered by the manipulation that led to Johnny’s ruin. With Denny by their side, the couple waits by Johnny’s body for the arrival of the authorities, confronted by the consequences of choices driven by passion, fear, and a desire to control the truth.
