The Devil’s in the Details

Thomas Conrad, a supermarket manager and former soldier, grapples with PTSD as he tries to readjust to life in Nogales. His wife Selina and their daughter Chloe are separated from him, leaving his personal life fractured. He begins therapy to identify the roots of his fear and seek a path toward healing.

In sessions with Dr. Bruce Michaels, Thomas starts to identify the moments that precipitated his condition and the fears that keep him from healing. The process provides him with insight and a potential direction for recovery. The therapy gradually helps him confront painful memories.

One evening after work, Thomas rear-ends another vehicle and reimburses a Mexican man named Bill Duffy for the damage. Bill invites him to drink, and the alcohol loosens boundaries, revealing family wounds and old secrets that touch a nerve he cannot ignore.

Thomas awakens restrained in a torture room, terrified, after surrendering his car keys. Bill, working with a conspirator named Corbin, reveals a kidnapping operation tied to a brutal cartel scheme and coerces Thomas into cooperating.

The ultimatum becomes explicit: the safety of his wife and daughter hinges on his compliance with the plan, which will unfold in real time. The pressure escalates as every move is tightly choreographed to trap him further.

Thomas's father, Richard, a judge, and his sister Claire, a police officer, are drawn into the operation as the family is pressed to perform the crime. The looming threat to their loved ones intensifies the stakes for Thomas.

Trevor, a young man who seems to offer help, is revealed to be aligned with Bill. Trevor's alliance drags in Olivia, Thomas's employee, leading to a violent act that pushes Thomas toward a breaking point.

Claire secures a substantial stash of drugs and money from a designated house, and the family races to deliver it to the drop-off point. During the transport, Claire is shot and killed, a devastating blow that deepens the crisis.

Richard contacts Dr. Michaels for help, who arrives at the house under the guise of a plumber. He eliminates two armed men and frees the captives, turning the tide in Thomas's favor.

Weak but determined, Thomas seizes an opportunity to kill Trevor and Corbin, escaping the room and pushing through the corridor toward safety. He discovers the audio equipment that had manipulated his perceptions, realizing the depth of the deception.

Exiting the bar where he has been held, Thomas confronts Bill at the counter and kills him. Bill's confession shatters the cartel illusion: there is no cartel, and the elaborate scheme was a manipulation designed to coerce Thomas into forcing his family to commit a heist.

Thomas learns that Claire's death was a consequence of their father’s involvement with the police. He injects Bill with a lethal compound to end the ruse and drives home to find his wife and daughter waiting on the doorstep, a fragile moment of relief amid the scars.
