Pietro Torre and Elena Walgren find themselves in the midst of what appears to be a contentious divorce intertwined with a fierce custody dispute over their two children, Bianca and Giovanni. As a practicing psychotherapist, Elena struggles to find work in Bari due to language barriers, which leads her to dedicate her time fully to raising their children. However, the divorce exposes troubling aspects of their lives; Pietro grapples with substantial gambling debts while Elena struggles with her reliance on prescription medication.

One weekend, while Elena is away, Pietro decides to take the children on an impromptu adventure on his boat. Their seemingly cordial relationship begins to unravel during this outing when they unexpectedly encounter Nicola, a figure from their past that intrigues the children but makes Pietro visibly uneasy.

Upon arriving at his country house, Pietro discovers that he is not only facing his personal demons, but also the chilling presence of his creditor, Santo. With a staggering debt of 250,000 euros hanging over his head, Pietro is pressured to surrender his property as collateral. He is persistent in refusing this option, asking only for a bit more time to settle the matter. However, the challenge becomes increasingly urgent when Giovanni, haunted by childhood fears, seeks his father’s comfort during the night. After soothing him back to sleep, a shocking revelation awaits Pietro—his children have vanished.

In a panic, Pietro informs Elena of the developments when she calls to say goodnight to the kids. To his horror, a ransom demand for 150,000 euros is made shortly thereafter. With no other option, Elena urges Pietro to reach out to his wealthy childhood friend Nico, who might be able to provide the necessary funds by the next morning—but only if Pietro agrees to undertake a perilous task: a late-night transaction in Greece.

Determined to save his children, Pietro embarks on a nighttime journey across the waters to a remote restaurant on a small island. He waits anxiously until he is approached and handed a note, signaling it’s time to leave. Just as he departs, he is intercepted by two armed men on jet skis, who demand he verify receipt of a mysterious duffel bag while brandishing their weapons menacingly. On his journey back to Italy, things take a turn for the worse as he finds himself needing to enlist the help of the coast guard. He cleverly conceals the duffel bag to prevent its discovery while staving off panic at the malfunctioning motor which threatens to strand him at sea. Racing against time, he finally arrives at Nico’s place, where a heated encounter with his childhood friend results in a flurry of tension and an ultimatum—he punches Nico in his frustration but eventually walks away with the cash needed to pay the ransom.

Returning to Elena with the money, he is momentarily relieved to find the children safe, blissfully unaware of the night’s chaotic events. However, the unease grows when he realizes that Elena is acting oblivious to the criminal undertones of what has transpired. As she threatens to call the police to report his erratic behavior, Pietro receives an audio recording from Elena—a piece of damning evidence that intensifies the stakes in their already fraught custody battle.

Determined to get to the bottom of it all, Pietro visits the children at their riding lesson, only to observe that they have begun to remember snippets of their time at his house. A sudden discovery of a discarded medication wrapper back at his home raises alarm bells, leading him to Elena’s apartment under the pretense of retrieving a forgotten passport. What he finds inside confirms his worst fears—Elena’s reliance on drugs has put their children in jeopardy, and the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together.

During a critical moment at the airport, Pietro confronts Elena privately, revealing that he is aware of her actions. He insists she must fly alone, threatening to have the children drug-tested if she doesn’t comply. In a moment of raw honesty, Elena admits the truth and shifts the blame onto Pietro’s rigidity regarding their custody arrangements.
