Stander

During the Soweto uprising, Stander and his fellow officers are assigned to riot duty. In the chaos of a riot in Tembisa, he shoots a young unarmed protester, an act that unsettles him and fuels his growing disillusionment with the apartheid system. The incident marks a turning point in his view of the regime.

On a lunch break, Stander walks into a bank and robs it. He thoroughly enjoys the rush and decides to embark on a spree of robberies. The act marks the start of his double life as a police officer turned criminal.

Following the initial heist, Stander continues robbing banks, sometimes using his status as a police officer to back up his actions or to respond to robberies in uniform. The line between duty and crime blurs as he revels in the thrill. The police begin to take notice.

Cor Van Deventer leads a task force that closes in on Stander after a spree of robberies. Stander is stripped of his role and sentenced to 32 years in prison. He begins a sentence that will eventually lead to unlikely alliances.

In prison, Stander befriends Lee McCall and Allan Heyl. The three quickly form a bond and talk of schemes for life after release. Their conversations plant the seeds for the notorious Stander Gang.

About a year into his sentence, Stander and McCall play a rugby game with other prisoners, feign serious injuries, and are taken to the infirmary. They knock the doctor unconscious and seize guards' weapons, enabling a daring escape. They immediately return for Heyl to complete their trio.

Loose from prison, the trio rob a string of banks, acquire a costly safehouse, and steal a yellow Porsche 911 Targa. They adopt new identities to hide from authorities and build their criminal enterprise. The thrill of their new life deepens their bond.

Cor Van Deventer leads a relentless pursuit against the Stander Gang. A gunshop hold-up results in a woman being shot and a witness identifying the gang. McCall drops money at a bank, and his spree further fuels the manhunt.

Stander devises a plan to rob the airport exchange office to escape the country. Hours before the robbery, he returns to Tembisa to seek peace with the protester's father, only to be beaten by him. The personal confrontation foreshadows the gang's fraying unity.

In 1984 the gang begins to organize their exit from South Africa. Stander travels to Cape Town to buy a boat while Heyl plans to go to Greece. McCall's own plan is cut short when police surround their safehouse.

During a police siege, McCall scrambles to escape and opens fire on the officers. Realizing there is no way out, he is gunned down by the police. Stander and Heyl witness the tragedy and press on with their plan to flee.

Stander and Heyl slip away in another vehicle after the siege and begin their exits from South Africa. Stander uses a fake passport to reach the airport, while Cor Van Deventer pursues a lead that ultimately proves false. Stander is allowed to leave.

Stander arrives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and cannot remain inactive. He hotwires a Mercury Cougar, runs a red light, and leads police on a brief chase. He disobeys orders, is shot multiple times by an officer, and dies.
