In 1983 South Africa, a young Vusi, Ice Cube organizes a radical student protest that is quickly torn down by the police, and he is captured, forced to leave for the United States, and eventually settles in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Fourteen years pass before Vusi returns to his homeland to attend his father’s funeral in the village where he grew up. He struggles with the traditional funeral ritual, unable to bring himself to slaughter a cow, a moment that unsettles his family and reveals the ache of a life split between two worlds. His younger brother Ernest, a former soldier, constantly needles him for running away to the U.S. rather than joining “the struggle.” This clash culminates in Vusi’s blunt retort: “I was in the struggle while you were still pissing in your pants.” In the quiet exchange with his mother, he also learns that their youngest son Steven has been out of touch, and she hands him two addresses, prompting Vusi to seek Steven out.
The first stop is Steven’s apartment in Johannesburg, where he encounters Karen, Elizabeth Hurley, the brother’s neighbor. Vusi leaves his contact details with her, hoping for any lead. After checking the second address, he begins driving out of Soweto, only to be ambushed by three armed criminals who steal his car, jacket, and shirt, and even break his father’s cherished spear. He returns to his hotel, contacts his fiancée, and then receives a note from Karen inviting him to The Summit Club.
At The Summit Club, Karen’s occupation as a stripper comes to light, and she reports hearing noises emanating from Steven’s apartment. After her performance, the two return to the apartment complex, deciding to investigate. Karen climbs along the exterior to Steven’s open window, where a bandit strikes her. The attacker escapes, knocking Vusi off balance. This incident intensifies Vusi’s suspicions about Steven. Karen eventually confesses that Steven had borrowed cocaine on “credit” from a dealer named Muki, and that Steven’s plan to fund a trip to the United States has collapsed into a threadbare scheme.
With the truth in hand, Karen suggests they hit local clubs to search for clues. At a hard-rock club, Vusi learns about Karen’s crack-cocaine habit after a hint of drug use from her. He confronts her, suspecting she’s connected to Steven’s troubles. The duo is accosted by white supremacist punks outside the club. One renders Karen unconscious after a scuffle, while the others pin Vusi to a wall; a tense confrontation ends with Vusi overpowering them and Karen handing him a gun. Back at the apartment, Karen presses Vusi to visit Steven’s drug dealer and buy a gram of crack, threatening to expose everything otherwise. Vusi reluctantly agrees.
Sam, the dealer, is wary at first but relaxes when he learns Vusi knows Karen. He explains that Muki will not permit a sale to Karen and that Muki suspects Karen and Steven are involved in something bigger. Sam demands extra money and orders Vusi to stay put. Steven then appears, escapes down an alley, and triggers a harrowing chase. A confrontation with Sam follows, and Sam reveals that Muki is watching. He returns the money and the drugs that Karen requested.
Back with Karen, Vusi learns that his status as Steven’s brother has been shared with Sam, and Karen grows increasingly paranoid that Muki will discover the connection. They part ways the next morning, and Vusi drops Karen off at her place. Soon after, one of Muki’s men confronts him in his car, leading to a coordinated interception by Muki’s associates and Vusi’s capture. He is bound for a soccer stadium where Muki awaits.
Muki lays out the debt: 45,000 rand for Steven, with a brutal ultimatum. He warns that the Madlazi family will be wiped out unless Vusi can deliver 15,000 dollars within two days. Karen urges Vusi to trace Steven to Sun City, where gambling might recover the funds. The pair head toward Sun City, passing an AWB rally and entering the casino with a shared sense of danger and urgency.
Inside the casino, Karen and Steven split up to search for money and a way to avert catastrophe. Steven—who has only managed to raise a fraction of the debt, 2,000 rand, despite having five grams of Muki’s product—tries to hide his growing cocaine habit from Karen and Vusi. A tense moment unfolds as Steven consumes more of the drug, and Vusi’s anger boils over when he sees the damage being done. The trio eventually leaves the casino with a plan to pay the debt.
With 14,100 dollars secured, they hurry back to the hotel to finalize the payment. Steven lashes out at Muki for wrecking his apartment, but Vusi keeps the group focused. Muki is oddly pleased with the partial payment but makes clear the remaining debt must be settled by the next day and hints that Steven will be used to send a message. In a brutal turn, Muki uses Vusi’s gun to shoot Steven, a moment witnessed by a detective sergeant who distrusts the violence.
Steven’s body is returned to the village for burial, where Vusi recruits Ernest to help him exact revenge. In the village, the spear is repaired, and Vusi completes a symbolic ritual by slaughtering a goat for Steven’s funeral. Ernest leads Vusi and Karen to a buried cache of weapons, and the trio returns to Sam’s apartment, armed for retaliation. Under duress, they coerce Sam into helping by bringing in a bomb Ernest had planted in a gift box.
Back at Muki’s place, Sam tries to warn Muki’s men, but the bomb detonates in the box, killing Sam and the guards. Vusi and Ernest carve their path through Muki’s henchmen, and Vusi’s wife’s attempt to shoot him is thwarted as she is killed first. Ernest confronts a drug-crazed Muki, who holds him hostage to force a surrender. Karen seizes the moment, takes aim from behind Muki, and fires a burst into the ceiling, providing Vusi with the opportunity to approach Muki and drive his spear into him. Muki falls to the street below, and police descend as the trio escapes the chaos.
In the final scene, Vusi persuades his fiancée to come to South Africa and settle in his village, while Karen contemplates entering a rehabilitation facility. Instead, Vusi suggests that she join them for a chance at a new life—together, in a place where the family’s legacy can start anew.
I was in the struggle while you were still pissing in your pants.
