Kim decides to pursue the spontaneous combustion case after a woman is found dead on the sidewalk. She pushes ahead on her own despite Eli's favoritism toward the men in the office. The case draws her toward occult rumors surrounding Fima and a mysterious bookstore.

In a meeting at Fima's used bookstore, the proprietor offers Kim a book on feminism and the occult as a gift. The encounter hints at a larger, stranger mystery behind the case. Kim accepts the book, which becomes a catalyst for what follows.

Kim has dinner with Hank at his family's house, where his father makes snide remarks about her Jewish background. The tension foreshadows later hostility toward Kim. The casual cruelty underscores the danger surrounding her investigation.

The next day, Kim visits Fima's apartment to ask more questions and is served a tea that makes her nauseated. She loses consciousness and later awakens among the coven as they prepare for a ritual. The scene signals the beginning of Kim's entanglement with Lilith's cult.

During the ritual, a live rat is sliced over Kim and a giant larva is inserted into her body. The larva emerges from her mouth as a full-grown roach-like creature, and Ricky drips its innards onto Kim's face. The ritual completes her initiation, leaving her shaken and transformed.

Kim rushes home terrified and finds Hank, seemingly safe at first. Ricky bursts in and stabs Hank to death, a brutal turn that deepens Kim's peril. The violence confirms that the cult will stop at nothing to maintain control over her.

Ricky captures Kim and binds her, while Janice arrives but does not help, instead telling Ricky to take Kim straight to Fima. The betrayal by a supposed ally heightens Kim's isolation. They haul her toward Fima's lair, escalating the danger.

Kim is locked in the meat locker at the nearby meat shop and loses consciousness again. She awakens to the cult surrounding her as Ricky rapes her in the confined space, intensifying her ordeal. Her body then begins the next stage of the transformation as her hands knot together and her legs burn with heat.

Jo opens the door and frees Kim's legs from a brittle cocoon-like substance, telling her she has been initiated and should leave. Kim regains some awareness and resolves to get help, despite the danger. Jo's intervention suggests a possible way out of the cult's reach.

Kim brings Detective Burt to her apartment, only to find it spotless and Hank's body missing, which makes her question her own sanity. The disappearance deepens the mystery and pushes Kim to search for the truth. She realizes the cult has altered reality around her.

At the newspaper's Christmas party, Kim confronts Eli about Hank's whereabouts, and he evasively claims Hank is away on assignment. Janice welcomes her to the 'family,' highlighting the toxic culture of the office. Frustrated and confused, Kim storms out.

On Christmas Eve, Kim lures Lonnie out of his house, and Ricky murders Hank's parents by strangling them with Christmas lights and setting the house on fire. The tension peaks as the cult's actions spill into the world outside. This act sets up the rooftop confrontation to come.

On the building roof, Kim is ordered to stab Lonnie but instead strikes Fima. Fima wounds Kim, and in a frenzy Ricky is killed by Fima. A giant larva feeds on Ricky, and Kim's hands burn as the Lilith curse intensifies. Kim stabs Fima through her own wound, causing the curse to transfer to Fima, who then dives off the roof as her daughter had.
