A violent slaughter occurs in an abandoned house in Louisiana where three college students are found dead. Detective Mark Lewis, Frank Grillo, arrives to assess the scene and calls for reinforcements. A shaken survivor, John, Dustin Milligan, is found and brought into questioning, while an ambulance arrives with the psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein, Maria Bello.
She talks to John, who says a séance in the house drew the attention of many spirits, including one he identifies as his mother, and that two group members—the pregnant girlfriend, Michelle, Cody H. Carolin, and her ex-boyfriend Bryan, [Scott Mechlowicz](/actor/scott-mechlowicz—are missing.
The story unfolds through two interlaced plots: one follows the interrogation of John by Dr. Klein and the police as they examine videotapes found in the house, and the other replays the actual events (often filmed by a camera) that John and the five other visitors experienced, featuring escalating paranormal phenomena.
Bryan is later found alive but runs away from the police, ending up cornered in a store. John hears the news on the police radio and, in a fit of rage, grabs a radio, shouting at Bryan to tell him where Michelle is. Bryan begins to act strangely while John nearly has a heart attack. Elizabeth screams for Mark to stop Bryan before he kills John, and Mark promptly shoots Bryan dead.
Mark returns to the house and discovers a secret area where he finds Michelle. As the paramedics roll her on the stretcher, Elizabeth discovers that John killed everybody at the same time that Detective Mark finds John’s lifeless body hanging.
The twist reveals that the “John” Elizabeth interrogated was a demon, who, as he starts to choke her, explains that the seal in the living room binds him to the house; John’s mother was meant to be the vessel of his escape, possessing John and killing everyone, so he can cross the seal and set himself free. The lights flicker, and when Mark bursts through the door, the demon vanishes just as Michelle is wheeled out of the house.
The film ends with Michelle in the ambulance, and a sinister figure moving in her belly, hinting at the demon’s attempt to escape into a new host.

Stories where a rational investigation uncovers a truly demonic threat. If you liked the investigative angle and supernatural dread of Demonic, explore these movies where a rational inquiry into a crime or haunting descends into a confrontation with demonic forces. These films blend crime thriller elements with terrifying paranormal horror for a uniquely unsettling experience.
These narratives typically begin with a mystery to be solved—a death, a disappearance, a haunting—approached through a lens of logic and evidence. As the investigation progresses, the clues point increasingly towards a supernatural cause, forcing the protagonists to confront a reality they didn't believe in, often with tragic or fatal consequences.
Movies are grouped here for their shared structure of a procedural investigation colliding with incomprehensible evil. They create a specific kind of dread by grounding the horror in a realistic framework before shattering it, making the supernatural threat feel more immediate and violating.
Horror stories where evil triumphs and there is no escape. For viewers who appreciate the uncompromisingly dark conclusion of Demonic, this list features horror films that share a similarly bleak and hopeless outcome. These stories provide no happy endings, focusing on the absolute victory of supernatural evil and the utter defeat of the characters.
The narrative pattern is one of inevitable descent. Characters, no matter how well-intentioned or resourceful, are systematically overwhelmed by a malevolent entity. The story structure builds towards a finale that confirms the futility of their struggle, often ending with the evil entity not just surviving but spreading or gaining new power.
These films are united by their profoundly pessimistic worldview and their commitment to a tone of absolute despair. They are for audiences seeking horror that doesn't provide comfort or closure, but instead delivers a chilling and emotionally heavy experience where the monster wins.
