Three friends, Lewis McBride, [Joaquin Phoenix], Sheriff [Vince Vaughn], and Tony, are vacationing on a sun-drenched island in Malaysia. Their trip begins with near-misses and questionable choices: they’re almost run down by a car on a bicycle ride, they fall prey to pressure from local locals pushing rhinoceros horn, and they end up with a large bag of hash bought from a Malaysian drug dealer. The group retreats to a beachfront house by the ocean and begins to ponder what their futures might hold in this island paradise. Tony and Sheriff decide to return to New York City, while Lewis, described as a “greenie,” dreams of traveling to Borneo to help endangered orangutans. On the last day, they discard the remaining hash. Time passes, and the survivors’ lives diverge—Sheriff becomes a limo driver, while Tony builds a successful career as an architect.
Beth, [Anne Heche], an up-and-coming lawyer, arrives with troubling news: Lewis has spent the last two years in Penang prison in Malaysia after hash was found at their Malaysia house. Beth reveals that Lewis faces the death penalty unless one or both of the men return to share responsibility. She reassures them that they will not be tortured or harmed while in prison. After a grueling eight days of warring loyalties and fear, Beth and Sheriff begin a heated love affair, and both men resolve to return to Malaysia.
Upon their arrival, everything seems stable at first, but the truth soon surfaces when they visit the prison to see Lewis. Lewis appears to bear psychological scars from the harsh imprisonment, though officials report he has not been tortured or starved like some others. Beth then reveals that she is Lewis’s sister and has been manipulating the two men. Her deception sowing distrust unsettles Tony, who becomes fearful of Malaysia’s justice system and ultimately returns to the United States. Sheriff initially follows Tony, but he chooses to face jail to save his friend and returns to the courtroom where Lewis is being tried.
The judge, moved by the act of courage but angered by a damning news clipping that blames the Malaysian justice system, becomes increasingly infuriated. He imposes a death sentence on Lewis, despite Sheriff’s decision to accept his share of responsibility, and assigns Sheriff an unspecified period of jail time. As Lewis is escorted toward the execution chamber, Sheriff yells up to him from a window, assuring him that he is not alone. Lewis steadies himself and dies quietly just as the message of solidarity seems to reach him.
In the aftermath, Sheriff comforts Beth, and their bond deepens as she kisses him, a quiet acknowledgment of shared tragedy. The attorney general later hints that the Malaysian government will quietly release Sheriff within six months, a face-saving move to quell the mounting media storm. Beth resolves to bring her brother back home and then plans to return to Malaysia to await his eventual release.
