Premachandran works as a carpenter and lives with his father, Balan Master. He toils with his friend Manikandan, building a house near a wealthy landlord. The pair's steady, hardworking routine anchors the early part of the story.

Kanmani, sold by her mother, works as a servant in the landlord's house and endures mistreatment. One night she tries to take her own life, but Premachandran intervenes and saves her. He hides her in a room in Chettiyar's building to keep her safe.

Kanmani disguises herself as a boy named Velayuthan Kutty and begins working with Premachandran and Manikandan. Balan Master grows fond of the disguised boy, complicating trust and affection among the men. The disguise shifts the dynamics at the worksite.

Premachandran shares a plan to send Kanmani to Tamil Nadu to work in a banyan company where his friend is employed. Kanmani resists the proposal, wanting to decide her own future. He privately confesses to Manikandan that Velayuthan Kutty is really Kanmani.

Manikandan overhears the truth and causes a late-night scene. Two policemen hear the commotion and arrest Premachandran and Kanmani. The incident brings their relationship into the open and triggers legal trouble.

In court, Kanmani declares that she and Premachandran are in love and had planned to elope to avoid imprisonment. Her testimony deepens their emotional bond, while Premachandran reveals he is an ex-convict involved in a murder case. The revelation complicates their chances in court.

It is revealed that Premachandran's friend Sivan killed a hooligan who abused his sister, adding to the backstory. Kanmani agrees to go to Tamil Nadu, but Premachandran refuses to let her go, instead arranging for her to stay in a hostel for safety. The couple's bond deepens under danger.

Premachandran's brother Ramachandran asks Balan Master to attend his daughter's marriage, pressing them to reconcile. The brothers have been living apart due to the bad behavior of Premachandran's brother and sister, yet Balan Master chooses to go with Premachandran. Their loyalty strengthens their family bond.

Upon returning, they discover their rented house has been destroyed, leaving them homeless again. Balan Master finds shelter in an old age home run by a retired Colonel until they can rent a new place. The setback forces them to rely on each other for support.

Premachandran travels to Kochi to meet Sivan, who has become a business tycoon. Sivan does not meet his expectations, leaving Premachandran disappointed. He returns with little to show for the trip.

On returning, Premachandran learns that Balan Master has died. He performs the ceremonial rites for his father and mourns his loss. The tragedy deepens Premachandran's sense of responsibility toward Kanmani.

Kanmani's uncle Jagathy Sreekumar and his sister arrive with court orders to take her back to Tamil Nadu. In a defiant finale, Premachandran grabs the wedding thali mala from Sundara Pandian and marries Kanmani, sealing their union against all odds.
