After learning that her husband is a bigamist who already had a wife, new mother Lily Gardner Patricia Roc resolves to raise her baby, Jimmy Cavan Malone on her own under her maiden name Lily Bates rather than give him up for adoption. Each day Lily leaves Jimmy at a day nursery while she works as a shopgirl at a department store, and then cares for Jimmy herself at night. Frances Norman [Rosamund John], a middle-class married woman who works at the day nursery to be around children after losing her own baby, is drawn to Jimmy and forms a quiet, protective attachment.

When Lily, worn down by her demanding schedule, falls ill with flu, Frances persuades Lily to let her and her husband look after Jimmy temporarily. When Lily recovers, she visits Jimmy at the Normans’ comfortable home and sees that he is safe, well fed, and happy. Seeing how well the boy is thriving, Lily agrees to let the Normans raise Jimmy, though she refuses to sign any legal document formally allowing them to adopt him. She steps back from active involvement, gradually drifting out of Jimmy’s life, though she cannot shake the ache of missing him.

The Normans do not tell Jimmy that he is adopted, and he grows up believing they are his real parents. Eight years pass, and Lily rises to a managerial position at the department store. She meets Bill Collins [Bill Owen], a kind shopkeeper who eventually marries her and is willing to accept Jimmy as his own. Lily returns to the Normans to reclaim Jimmy now that she has the means to care for him, but the Normans refuse to give him up, arguing that Lily has not been part of his life and that he does not know he is not their natural child. A legal battle follows, and the court ultimately awards custody to Lily due to the absence of a formal adoption agreement. Jimmy moves into Lily and Bill’s home, yet he struggles to adjust to a working-class environment and longs to return to the Normans, who remain for him the closest thing to “mummy and daddy.”

Seeing his unhappiness, Bill urges Lily to let Jimmy return to the Normans. The family units remain divided in space, yet converge in affection: Lily and Bill go on to have a baby of their own, and their household is shown celebrating the new arrival, while Jimmy marks a birthday with the Normans. The film lingers on the idea that love and care can create two families who look after a child in their own distinct ways, underscoring the resilience of unconventional families in the face of social constraints.
