As the story unfolds in this captivating film, Georges Iscovescu, portrayed by Charles Boyer, shares his tumultuous journey with a Hollywood director. This Romanian charmer finds himself stranded in a dusty Mexican border town with aspirations of reaching the United States, only to face the daunting challenges imposed by the quota system. He finds himself stuck at the Esperanza Hotel, enduring a frustrating six-month wait alongside other hopeful migrants, while his resources dwindle and despair sets in.

His situation takes a turn when he encounters an old friend, Anita Dixon. Anita, having gamed the immigration system through a hasty marriage to an American and an equally swift divorce, inspires Georges to adopt a similar strategy. He sets his sights on Miss Emmy Brown, played by Paulette Goddard, a schoolteacher who is visiting Mexico with fifteen energetic students. During a seemingly innocent automobile repair delay at the Esperanza, Georges manages to whisk Emmy away in an impromptu wedding ceremony, professing that she resembles his lost love.

Initially, Georges’ clever scheme appears to be unfolding without a hitch. Yet complications arise when Emmy returns shortly after with her students in tow. Their hasty marriage is soon threatened by the determined Immigration Inspector Hammock, who’s onto Georges. With Emmy at his side, they are forced into a whirlwind of escapes and secretive moves to dodge immigration enforcement.

As they traverse the picturesque countryside, Georges begins to feel a profound transformation, shifting from selfish scheming to genuinely connecting with his new bride. A local newlywed blessing ceremony catches them by surprise, which Emmy believes marks the end of their journey. Georges, however, concocts an injury to delay consummating their marriage. Nonetheless, Emmy’s naïve charm becomes a magnetic force that ultimately draws him in.

Ultimately, Georges’ facade begins to buckle, revealing a deeper affection for Emmy. To secure funding for Emmy’s recovery, Georges seeks to sell his story to the esteemed director Dwight Saxon at Paramount Pictures. Alas, an encounter with Hammock leads to his capture and a return to Mexico. Days blur into weeks, and while Anita has found comfort in another relationship, Georges is haunted by Emmy’s absence. One day, while lost in thought on a bench, Hammock returns to deliver surprising news: Georges has finally obtained approval for his visa.

Looking up, Georges is met with an exhilarating sight—Emmy, adorned with a stunning hat, waving joyously from the other side of the border. With renewed hope ignited in his heart, Georges makes a courageous choice to cross the border once more and reunite with the woman he truly loves, signaling his transformation from a man of schemes to one driven by heartfelt affection.
