Gopalam, the zamindar of Appapuram, and his family are at the center of a delicate web of duty, tradition, and ambition. He establishes a high school in the town and names it after his elder daughter Mahalakshmi, Savitri. When Mahalakshmi disappears as a child during a pilgrimage in Kakinada, the school’s future becomes entangled with the family’s past. The running of the school falls into the hands of Gopalam’s nephew, A. K. Raju, Nageshwara Rao Akkineni, who is an amateur detective by temperament but also prone to mismanaging affairs, which begins to destabilize things. The situation worsens with Panthulu, Allu Ramalingaiah, an ayurvedic doctor and teacher at the school, who treats his position as an opportunity to recruit students for his medicinal experiments rather than to educate them. In a bid to stabilize the institution, Gopalam decides to replace the personnel with a married pair of graduates, hoping they can both teach and provide a model of home life for his younger daughter Sita, Jamuna, who is eager to learn traditional music and dance.

Mahalakshmi’s tale takes a turn when she is found and taken in by a Madras-based Christian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Paul, who name her Mary. As Mary completes her education, she tries to find employment to support her family, while the debt she owes to a loan shark, I. P. David, gnaws at her. The loan, her father’s doing, stands as a heavy burden, and David’s offer to waive it comes with a heavy price. To clear the debt, Mary agrees to a plan proposed by another unemployed graduate, M. T. Rao, N. T. Rama Rao, whom she meets during a job interview. The two pretend to be a married couple to qualify for positions at Gopalam’s school, a ruse that also tests Rao’s own ethics and adaptability. Devayya, a shrewd opportunist who makes a living by clever ways to beg for money, befriends Rao and accompanies the duo to Appapuram as a helper and cook, and the trio sets up residence in a modest house behind Gopalam’s bungalow.

Back at the school, Gopalam and his wife treat the new hires like their own daughter and son-in-law, a display of warmth that paradoxically makes Mary feel more constrained and less free. She is soon overwhelmed by the customs and expectations of the household, and she begins to feel stifled by the affection that comes with the job. Although she needs the work to repay David, she cannot fully embrace the role she is playing, and she vents her frustration to Rao, who remains patient and understanding. Sita, meanwhile, comes to them seeking music lessons and, in the process, unintentionally draws Rao’s attention. Mary’s sense of propriety is offended by the budding closeness between Rao and Sita, intensifying her own conflicted feelings for Rao.

In a moment of desperation, Mary considers revealing her true identity to Gopalam and his wife. To salvage their jobs, Rao fabricates a story, claiming that Mary is possessed by the soul of Mary, the mother of Jesus, a far-fetched defense that buys them time but does not resolve the underlying tensions. When Mary hints she might leave Rao, Gopalam threatens to marry Sita to Rao himself, a maneuver that would seal the couple’s employment and alter the social balance of the household. Raju, the nephew who loves Sita, schemes to separate Rao from Sita, turning to Mary for help in teaching music—a plan that quickly spirals out of control and leads to a series of unintended consequences. At the close of their first month at the school, Rao and Mary are paid their salaries, and Mary quietly pays back a portion of her debt.

As time passes, Raju begins to suspect that Mary is the missing Mahalakshmi. A telling detail—the mole on Mahalakshmi’s right foot—becomes the key clue Gopalam and his assistant Govinda, V Balakrishna, use to test whether Mary is indeed the long-lost daughter. They sneak into Mary’s room at night, hoping to verify the truth, but their plan backfires when they are awakened, prompting a dream sequence in which Rao rescues Mary from the danger posed by David. This dream solidifies Mary’s growing attachment to Rao and deepens the emotional tension within the household.

Sita’s insistence on music lessons from Rao continues to create pressure, pushing Mary toward a breaking point. She contemplates returning to Madras, but Rao encourages her to stay, and for a while, he shields her by telling Gopalam that Mary is unwell and intends to travel home. The situation takes a dramatic turn when David arrives with sharper intent and informs Raju that Mary, though a Christian, has been posing as a Hindu to secure the job. The truth behind Mary’s identity begins to surface, and a necklace that David had stolen from Mary’s home in Madras—said to have belonged to Mahalakshmi—becomes a critical piece of the puzzle that Raju must confront.

David’s ambitions come into sharp focus as he presses his claim to marry Mary, but Mary openly declares her love for Rao. The Pauls arrive at Gopalam’s house, and with Raju’s intervention, the mystery starts to unravel: David is arrested, and the truth about Mary’s lineage and her parentage is confirmed. Despite this revelation, Mary chooses to maintain her bond with the foster family that gave her a home, while also acknowledging the claim of her biological parents. The film closes with a sense of renewed belonging and reconciliation as Gopalam, recognizing Rao and Mary’s true feelings, declares their forthcoming wedding, and also approves the marriage between Sita and Raju, providing a hopeful resolution to a story built on mistaken identities, family obligation, and the search for personal identity within the constraints of tradition.
