Premachandran Mohanlal is a hardworking carpenter who shares a simple life with his father, Balan Master Gopi, and his loyal friend Manikandan Innocent. They work together on a new house near the residence of a wealthy landlord, where Kanmani Meera Jasmine toils as a servant and endures harsh treatment. Seethamma KPAC Lalitha lives there with her daughter Kumari Muthumani Somasundaran, who harbors a soft spot for Premachandran.
One night, Premachandran heads back to their workplace to retrieve his tools and catches a glimpse of Kanmani sneaking out of the house. Troubled, he follows her and discovers she is on the verge of taking her own life. He intervenes just in time, offering her shelter in a room he rents from Chettiyar, insisting that his friend merely missed the last bus home. To stay hidden, Kanmani adopts a disguise and becomes a boy, calling herself Velayuthan Kutty, and begins working alongside Premachandran and Manikandan. The disguise catches the eye of Balan Master, who grows fond of the supposedly young helper.
As days pass, Premachandran talks of a plan to secure Kanmani’s future by sending her to Tamil Nadu to work in a banyan company where a friend is employed. Kanmani rejects this idea, craving independence and safety on her own terms. A fateful slip occurs when Premachandran casually confides to Manikandan that Velayuthan Kutty is actually Kanmani; the confession unsettles Manikandan, who blurts out the truth in the night. The revelation reaches two policemen, who arrest Premachandran and Kanmani, pulling them into custody.
In court, Kanmani speaks with surprising clarity, telling the judge that she and Premachandran are in love and had planned to elope to avoid punishment. What begins as a desperate bid for freedom evolves into a genuine connection, and Kanmani’s feelings for Premachandran deepen. Premachandran then reveals a painful truth about his past: he is not merely a hardworking man but also an ex-convict connected to a murder case. He explains that his close friend, Sivan [Mukesh], killed a hooligan who had abused Premachandran’s sister. This confession reframes their predicament, helping Kanmani understand the risks he has faced.
Despite the looming danger, Kanmani agrees to a future in Tamil Nadu, yet Premachandran refuses to let go of the bond they have formed and instead helps arrange a safer path for her by admitting her to a hostel, staying by her side through the uncertainty.
Complications mount when Premachandran’s brother, Ramachandran [Siddique], arrives with a request for their father to attend his daughter’s wedding and to keep Premachandran away from family matters. In truth, the two siblings have been living apart due to the misdeeds of Ramachandran and a sister, causing Balan Master to hesitate about returning home. Yet Premachandran’s insistence that Balan Master join him — because he treats his elder as a father figure and loves his niece as if she were his own daughter — helps mend the rift. The reunion is bittersweet; upon their return, they find their rented home wrecked, and Balan Master seeks refuge in an old-age home run by a retired Colonel until they can secure a new place.
Premachandran journeys to Kochi to meet Sivan, now a powerful businessman, hoping for help, but Sivan proves unable to meet his demands. When he returns, he learns that Balan Master has died. He honors the family’s rites and makes his way back to Kanmani, carrying the weight of loss and responsibility.
Meanwhile, Kanmani faces pressure from her would-be uncle, Sundara Pandyan [Jagathy Sreekumar], and his sister, who possess a court order to return Kanmani to Tamil Nadu. In a decisive moment that redefines their future, Premachandran steps forward. He seizes the ceremonial thali mala from Sundara Pandyan and, with a quiet vow, ties the knot with Kanmani, cementing their union in the face of adversity.
The story unfolds with a balance of hardship, resilience, and quiet romance, depicting two people who find each other amid poverty, prejudice, and danger, choosing to chart a future together on their own terms. The film blends moments of tenderness with the grit of survival, highlighting the sacrifices made by those who choose to protect one another against all odds.
