On a cruise from Singapore to India, Gopal, a wealthy businessman, crosses paths with Latha, who travels with her father Ramadurai. The two quickly warm to each other and accept Gopal’s invitation to spend time at his grand mansion in the hill town of Ooty, where a quiet, sheltered life seems possible for them both.
During their stay, [Gopal] opens up about a fear that grips him whenever he sees an onrushing train, a phobia he admits is tied to a past tragedy involving his first wife. To understand the ache behind his anxiety, we are drawn into the backstory of that earlier marriage.
[Gopal] fell in love with Chitra, a nightclub singer, and they wed with Raju as a witness to their union. But the gilded surface hid turmoil. Chitra’s drinking and disregard for tradition strained the young couple, and on [Gopal]’s birthday party she arrived at home intoxicated. He tried to impose some boundaries, but she pushed back, and his father’s heart gave way under the strain of witnessing the chaos. The rift widened when Chitra later attempted to leave, and, after a heated confrontation, [Gopal] slapped her, unaware that she suffered from a heart condition. Soon after, news came that Chitra had died near a railway track, a tragedy that haunted him and fed his fear of trains. Despite the grief, Latha begins to understand and sympathize with Gopal, and she accepts his growing love.
The engagement between [Gopal] and [Latha] is soon fixed, and the wedding plans move forward with a celebration at the mansion. Yet the day takes a sharp turn when a woman claiming to be [Chitra] arrives, accompanied by her uncle Rangan. The visit unsettles everyone, and [Rangan] persuades the guests that the visitor is indeed Chitra. To many, it seems the past is rearing its head again. [Gopal] insists the visitor is an impostor and presents what he believes to be Chitra’s death certificate as proof, but the document is read by Rangan as evidence that serious doubt surrounds the supposed match. The tension grows, and even Kumar, a police officer who is a friend of [Gopal], begins to see cracks in the story, though [Gopal] remains convinced that his wife is dead and that the impostor is only a distraction.
Despite a string of failed attempts to unmask the impostor, the truth about Chitra’s death finally comes to light: [Gopal] had, in a moment of rage, struck Chitra and, unknowingly, caused her death due to her heart condition. In trying to protect his family’s honor and avoid arrest, he had orchestrated a suicide scenario on the railway, fabricating the evidence to support that claim. The truth reshapes the crisis, but it does not erase the consequences of his actions.
In a dramatic turn, [Latha] is revealed to be more than just a fiancée. She steps forward as a police officer investigating Chitra’s death, following a complaint logged by [Raju] who suspected the suicide claim was not credible. [Ramadurai] appears as her senior, appearing to play along as her father, while [Rangan] remains the local investigating officer, and the impostor is revealed to be Sarasa, Rangan’s aide. Together, they stage an entrapment to coax a confession from the killer.
As the truth comes to light, [Latha] confesses to [Gopal] that while she initially pretended to love him to uncover the truth, she grew to genuinely care for him and vows to wait for him until his sentence ends. The revelation brings a measure of relief to [Gopal], yet his fate remains sealed as he is arrested, leaving him to face the consequences of his past actions while awaiting what comes next.
