Police officer Jessica Shepard (Ashley Judd) has recently made a significant leap in her career, being transferred to the homicide division and promoted to detective inspector. Her inaugural case is particularly disturbing; it involves the murder of a man she had previously dated. Just when things couldn’t get more unsettling, another body turns up the next day—with the same distinctive cigarette burn on his hand and yet another connection to Jessica. It appears they are on the hunt for a serial killer targeting men with whom Jessica has had relationships.
As the investigation deepens, Jessica begins experiencing haunting dreams that connect to her troubled past. In a crucial moment, she uncovers an old box belonging to her father, who was also a police officer but descended into madness, ultimately taking the lives of his wife, her lovers, and then his own. Throughout her tumultuous upbringing, Jessica was raised by her father’s partner, John (Samuel L. Jackson), who later became the police commissioner. John ensured Jessica learned the ins and outs of police work.
When a third murder occurs, her vigilant partner, Mike Delmarco (Andy Garcia), steps in to keep a protective watch over Jessica. The situation escalates dramatically when a fourth victim is found in her own bed, leading Jessica to an agonizing reality—she has no recollection of the crimes. Each murder happens in a foggy haze, as she blacks out just before the horrific acts transpire. The chilling twist unfolds when the true identity of the killer is finally revealed to be none other than John, intertwining her past with a present full of betrayal.
