What Happens in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Princess Rosalina, Brie Larson, who lives in the Comet Observatory and serves as the adoptive mother to the Lumas, is kidnapped by Bowser Jr., Benny Safdie, who plans to drain her power to fuel a universe-destroying cannon built in honor of his father, Bowser Jack Black. A Luma escapes and travels to the Mushroom Kingdom, where Peach Anya Taylor-Joy and Toad Keegan-Michael Key answer the alarm and enlist help. Mario Chris Pratt and Luigi Charlie Day head to the desert town of Tosterena, where they befriend a friendly dinosaur named Yoshi Donald Glover. Together, the trio—along with Yoshi—protect the Mushroom Kingdom in Peach’s absence and work to rehabilitate Bowser, hoping to bring his power back under some form of control.

Bowser Jr. lifts Peach’s castle into space in a bid to free his father, but the plan backfires when the castle is accidentally dropped into the Honeyhive Galaxy. Bowser finds himself unshrunk and offers to surrender in exchange for the brothers and Yoshi, only to be abducted by his own son, whom he hadn’t seen in years. In the Gateway Galaxy, Peach and Toad search for Rosalina after re-taking Toad’s backpack from Ukiki, who is working for Wart, a frog-like casino owner; Wart’s influence helps them zero in on Bowser Jr.’s location.

Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi reunite with Peach and Toad, who have hired pilot Fox McCloud Glen Powell to transport the group. Fox’s spaceship crash-lands in Fossil Falls after Bowser Jr. launches another assault, and Bowser Jr. uses a Super Scope to briefly turn Mario and Luigi into babies. Bowser expresses some regret about bonding with the brothers, but Bowser Jr. convinces him to resume his kingly duties over the Koopas. Yoshi locates the Super Scope, rescues the brothers from a Tyrannosaurus rex, and restores their ages, while Luigi signals the Lumas to ferry everyone back to the Comet Observatory.

Back in orbit, Peach discovers she shares powers with Rosalina—revealing that Rosalina is her long-lost older sister, who sent an infant Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom to protect her from an unidentified attacker. The crew uses the Comet Observatory to send the others to Bowser Jr.’s hideout and prepare for a final confrontation. Mario and Peach face Bowser in a climactic duel; Bowser is driven into a lava moat and appears defeated, but he survives in a skeletal form, and Luigi and Yoshi join Mario in a final push with power-ups. Peach’s steadfast resolve helps rescue and reunite Rosalina with the Lumas, and Peach’s castle is rebuilt as Fox dispatches the Bowsers to prison and heads home to his own galaxy. In a separate moment of courage, Princess Daisy prevents another robbery by Ukiki in the Gateway Galaxy, keeping the wider cosmos safe for now.

Bowser Jr. kidnaps Rosalina to drain her cosmic power and fuel a universe-destroying cannon he built in honor of his father Bowser. This massive weapon was created specifically to break Bowser out of prison and restore the Koopa family's legacy. The plan required Rosalina's unique abilities because she possesses the power to fuel the Observatory's machinery.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, Bowser Jr. is shown researching Rosalina's powers and planning the cannon's construction.

Q2

How does Bowser Jr. plan to free Bowser from prison?

Bowser Jr. builds a massive universe-destroying cannon powered by Rosalina's extracted cosmic energy. The cannon was designed to blast open Bowser's prison and free his father. However, the plan backfires when Peach's castle, which Bowser Jr. lifted to help free Bowser, is accidentally dropped into the Honeyhive Galaxy, throwing everything off course.

Foreshadowing: The timeline shows Bowser Jr. constructing the cannon well before the main events of the movie.

Q3

Why does Bowser Jr. abduct his own father after Bowser offers to surrender?

After Bowser is accidentally unshrunk, he offers to surrender in exchange for Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi. Instead of accepting, Bowser Jr. abducts his own father because he hadn't seen Bowser in years and wanted to reclaim his position as the heir to the Koopa throne. Bowser Jr. manipulates his father back into leadership, using Bowser's desire to restore the family legacy against him.

Foreshadowing: The timeline reveals Bowser Jr. hadn't seen his father in years before these events.

How does the Super Scope turn Mario and Luigi into babies?

During the ambush at Fossil Falls, Bowser Jr. uses a device called a Super Scope to briefly de-age Mario and Luigi into babies. This weapon drains their age and physically transforms them into infants. Yoshi later discovers the same Super Scope and uses it to reverse the effect, restoring the brothers' ages after rescuing them from a Tyrannosaurus rex.

What is the relationship between Rosalina and Peach?

Rosalina is revealed to be Peach's long-lost older sister. Rosalina sent an infant Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom to protect her from an unidentified attacker. Both share the same cosmic powers, which is why Peach was able to use Rosalina's abilities during the rescue mission. Q6

Why does Peach have the same powers as Rosalina?

Peach has the same powers as Rosalina because they are biological sisters. Rosalina sent baby Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom for her protection, but the genetic connection meant Peach inherited the same cosmic abilities. This is why Peach could operate the Comet Observatory machinery and why her powers were crucial to defeating Bowser Jr.'s scheme.

Foreshadowing: Peach's innate ability to use Rosalina's powers hints at their shared lineage.

Ending explained

What Happens at the End of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

How The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.

Read the full ending explained

Saving Rosalina and stopping the immediate galactic threat does not return Mario’s group to the Mushroom Kingdom they left. Bowser Jr.’s attempt to pull Peach’s castle into space has torn the building away and left a vast hole where the kingdom’s center stood. Rosalina and the Lumas remain to help, using their cosmic abilities alongside Mario and his friends to reconstruct the castle rather than disappearing once the rescue is complete. When the highest tower is restored, Mario takes a Cape Feather, becomes Cape Mario, flies to the roof, and plants the flag. The main story ends on that deliberately game-like completion image. Two credit scenes then reopen the world in different directions. The first begins outside a prison with Fox McCloud departing for an unspecified new mission. Inside, Bowser has survived in skeletal Dry Bowser form and is locked in a cell with Bowser Jr., who tries to dig their way out. Lumalee—formerly a prisoner associated with cheerful doom—now frightens the captive villains. The second scene returns to Gateway Galaxy, where Ukiki steals luggage from a traveler. The victim is Daisy; she catches the monkey, answers the theft with a punch, and closes the film with a wink.

The castle repair supplies the resolution that defeating Bowser Jr. alone cannot. His plan treated the kingdom’s home as an object to seize and relocate, while Rosalina’s decision to help rebuild turns the cosmic alliance into practical care for the damage left behind. Mario’s flag is recognizable as a level-ending reward, but he reaches it only after a collective restoration in which the Lumas are as important as his final flight. The credit scenes then distribute sequel possibilities without pretending they are part of the same emotional conclusion. Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. preserve the franchise’s recurring antagonists while reversing Lumalee’s prison position for a joke; Fox McCloud suggests that the animated universe can expand beyond Mario’s immediate cast. Daisy’s entrance is the most complete character statement of the three. She is introduced through action, handles Ukiki without assistance, and acknowledges the audience on her own terms. The galaxy is safe and the castle is home again, but the wider world is already populated by characters whose adventures do not depend on Mario initiating them.
