On a cruise from Singapore to India, Gopal meets Latha and her father Ramadurai. They form a connection, and Gopal invites them to stay at his Ooty mansion. This invitation marks the start of a tangled, evolving relationship.

During their stay, Latha notices that Gopal panics at the sight of an onrushing train. He explains that the fear is linked to the death of his first wife, Chitra. The revelation adds a dark layer to his past.

Gopal's past unfolds: after losing his mother in Singapore, he wanders and falls in love with Chitra, a nightclub singer. They marry in front of Chitra's brother, Raju. This union sets the stage for later tragedy.

Chitra's charm is tempered by a rebellious streak and heavy drinking. Gopal's father dies of a heart attack after witnessing her behavior. The family turmoil strains the couple's relationship.

Chitra attempts to leave, but Gopal pleads for her to stay. She berates him for attempting to control her, widening their rift. The quarrel foreshadows the tragedy to come.
