Matt’s obsessive investigation into the chemical factory’s past reveals that there was no hidden secret or conspiracy, only the tragic aftermath of his family’s history. The factory’s real secret was a deep sense of guilt and regret carried by Pol, Matt’s father, who was responsible for the death of his wife, Michelle. She suffered from postpartum psychosis, which was hereditary, and she was overwhelmed by her mental health struggles when she drowned herself and their baby in the pond by the house. Pol’s attempt to save his son was noble but ultimately futile, and he was haunted by the loss of his wife, feeling responsible for her death. This grief fueled his dementia and led him to manipulate Matt’s perceptions, convincing him that there was some sinister secret hidden at the factory.

In a final act of bravery, Matt attempts to uncover bodies he believes are buried beneath the house by digging into the floor. Instead of finding any corpses, he accidentally opens a hole into the waterbed, suggesting that the actual remains are in the nearby lake. As Matt and Liv struggle with the water, they are rescued by Pol, who appears unexpectedly and pulls them out. The scene ends with Matt and Liv back at the house, seemingly at peace, but the film’s ending hints at Matt’s fragile mental state. As he stands looking at the pond, smiling, it suggests that he might be contemplating following the same tragic path as his mother.
