There he discovers a seashell that Ellen had described as a key piece of evidence, and a dory bearing a distinctive name she’d claimed to have seen that day while beachcombing. These tangible clues begin to connect Ellen to a precise timeline, and David follows the trail to the home of the town’s justice of the peace, only to find it empty.
