Naram Garam follows Kusum and her father as they lose their home after debts owed to a local moneylender push them to the street. They are taken in by Ramprasad, a kindhearted man who is in love with Kusum and steps in to provide shelter and protection, crafting a fragile new arrangement from the shadows.

Bhavani Shankar is a formidable figure, feared by his family and workers, yet he is secretly terrified of his own mother-in-law. After [Ramprasad] helps Bhavani Shankar reclaim his ancestral home following a 53-year legal battle with a squatter, Bhavani Shankar assigns him the task of restoring the house so it can be lived in again. In the meantime, Kusum and her father find shelter there, and Ramprasad, who has no house of his own, lets them stay illegally for the time being.

When estate manager Gajanand arrives, he is furious and determined to oust the squatters. Yet his feelings for Kusum soften his resolve, and instead of ejecting them, he proposes marriage to Kusum. Horrified, Kusum and Ramprasad turn to Babua, Kali Shankar Bajpai, for help. Babua is a garage mechanic with a big heart for women in distress, and he manages to dissuade Gajanand from pressing the marriage, even as he himself is drawn to Kusum’s beauty and presses his own suit.

Ramprasad then faces a new twist as he seeks help from [Bhavani Shankar], who, captivated by Kusum’s voice and beauty, believes she is the reincarnation of his dead wife Ahilya. Bhavani Shankar decides to marry Kusum, but wants to keep the ceremony secret, with Ramprasad’s knowledge. To complicate matters, Ramprasad invites Bhavani Shankar’s mother-in-law and daughter to the house at the exact date and time of the supposed marriage, without telling them what is really happening. Bhavani Shankar, overwhelmed by the situation, falters and is nudged to a bold choice. He secretly convinces Ramprasad to marry Kusum instead, and Ramprasad negotiates his salary and the house in return for the deal. Thus, Kusum and Ramprasad ultimately marry, and the true story behind the arrangement remains undisclosed.
